This fluorescent light fixture in my garage either wouldn't turn on at all or would flicker so much it wasn't even worth it. Watch and see what the problem was, and how I fixed it.

I’m a electrician in Richmond, Virginia. Great job. Great job. The most important thing that you did was cutting off the power before working on the light fixture. There are lots of small simple DIY electrical projects that home owners can safely do themselves, but most people don’t want to watch the free videos, and do the research to complete the task. Believe it or not, there are folks that will pay me to simply change light bulbs. Keep up the good work,

When you wired your common tombstone connectors with the yellow wires, how did you wire them? Was it like this: Tombstone connector for lamp one: Wire hole 1: yellow Wire hole 2: white wire Wire hole 3: yellow Wire hole 4: red wire Tombstone connector for lamp 2: Wire hole 1: no wire Wire hole 2: red wire Wire hole 3: no wire Wire hole 4: white wire I am trying to troubleshoot a rapid ballast replacement for 2 lamps. When I switch it on it flashes once and shuts off/does not turn on.

This is the first time I've seen your videos. I have changed tons of ballasts over the years. I can give you a couple of tips. Get yourself a small tool pouch to wear, I use one that has two pockets. Tools in one and parts in the other. Another thing is when you wire the ballast trim some of the wire off, the blues, reds and yellows. There's no reason to leave it all in there as it just make it harder to pack the wires in. I also twist the wires together to make them easier to pack. Another thing you may want to consider is revamping the fixture to LED. Thanks for the video, Bob

Yeah I have no idea why I haven't bought myself a tool pouch yet! I've made over a hundred thirty videos, which I know means encompasses all of the projects I've done, and I still don't have a dang tool pouch.

I do not know how many videos you saw before trying to repair the ballast on your own, but certainly you are an amazing woman, I really enjoyed watching it, and hearing you saying all the things you said and seeing you fixing your hair from time to time (you usually don see that on most videos), you seem like a nice and sweet person. G'day. I am not an electrician but do my own electrical work. I do get it checked after I do it though. I live in Ontario, Canada. You can run the wiring for your house but are not allowed to hook it up until it is inspected. I am in the process of changing my very old ballast to the newer type. My electrician friend showed me the diagrams and said if I got stuck I was just to call him and he would walk me through it. If all the lights go out in central Canada and the USA then you know it was me. Thank you very much for your video.

OMG you saved my day!! When I changed my flourescent light bulb today, like you, I thought all it took was to slot the new one back into place. Not so! I went back to the store twice for a replacement thinking they had sold me a dud and still no luck! So I found your video and good things started to happen when near the end of your demonstration you turned the bulb a 1/4 turn to fix it into place. That was my problem all along - I didn't TURN the bloody thing! This literally was a light bulb moment for me and made me feel great! Thank you so much!!

Phew...I just finished mine. Added complication for me was that I watched a different video before I found yours. Thank you for posting it! That other one didn't mention cutting the wires to the "tombstones" = sockets...so I removed them with the burned out ballast initially...then I had to put all that back together, but luckily, I could do that sitting down...still was an adventure. The screws that fasten the tombstone holders to the upper part of the lamp fixture are very short and pull into frame pieces that slide in from each end. Very complicated design---why???!!! Also, I had 4 bulbs, not 2. I, too, struggled with putting all the wires behind the blind to make things look orderly. All in all, this cost me 4 bulbs (13.68 each =$27.36), 1 ballast @29.98 all plus tax and two trips to the box store....and oh, nerves to be up on top of my ladder (hello, 14' ceiling in the kitchen!). But hey, I did it! Took me about 3 hours, but I "let there be light"! This was my 1st fluorescent ceiling light, but I've installed/removed a half dozen fans, installed numerous ceiling fixtures and replaced many outlets and switches, replaced damaged plugs (male & female) and repaired extension cords (ahem, electric plug in mower, lol)--AND that's just the electrical stuff. You should hear what plumbing adventures I've had!!! I agree with @mikewalker1573...people are weird--why pay someone to do this? Is time really so precious??? That's a shame. Where is the fun in life???!!! As a single woman, I encourage all you single ladies (and guys) out there to use this wonderful youtube universe--YOU CAN DO THIS TOO!!

I had heard about the "ballast" but didn't know what to do about it. Back to the store - I'm taking my old one with me! My only recommendation is to turn on the juice before the final installation of the bulbs to see if you've twisted them in place correctly and then snap the translucent cover back on. Just one less potential aggravation point. thanks

there are 4 starting methods there is preheat which requires starters, rapid start, instant or electric start and 2 types of program start, pre head tends to flash a few times before the lamp fully starts.rapid starts feeds on.instant electric start is instant on, program is an like rapid start but electronics and uses less power than the older rapid start, not only you got to get the same wattage that the ballets can handle but you got to get the right " T " size theres is T12 which is used in that fixture,T8 which is skinnier and T5 with is smaller , with 4 foot fixtures that would use either A F32T8 or F40T12 and 3 foot use F30T12 or F30T8, 2 foot use F17T8 or F30T12 you need to match the same T size and the same wattage the ballast can handle and wire the ballast correctly for the light to properly run

Lol, that was wonderful! You are funny, beautiful, and resourceful. I have been putting this off, hired a guy to help me, he took out all the bulbs i had actually lit, said I just need to replace the fixtures. So now my garage is fully dark, not a single bit of light at night. He suggested plug in fixtures. I don't want to do that. What i wonder, is, can a person test the ballasts? Or should I just replace them, or replace the whole fixture. A friend said I would have no problem wiring in new fixtures.. and my mom thinks it's more cost effective to replace the whole fixtures. THIS video has inspired me to investigate and find out. But thought I'd ask anyway. Great job! It feels good when you can fix it yourself. Seriously.

Ballasts can also contain capacitors which retain an electrical charge for minutes after de-energizing, so in this case, definitely good to de-energize circuit on a breaker, wait several minutes and then check for dead with multimeter.

Great and helpful video! I like to avoid using wingnut splices if at all possible since every splice is a possibility to fail or overheat if you didn't get the ends just right. Usually that will just cost you a little money over time and brown your wingnuts, worst case you can get a fire and by cutting the wires as in this video, that is six splice opportunities. If you change these out again one possibility would be to simply remove the wires from the connector itself on the light fixture. It is almost as easy as cutting the wires. The wires are held in by a metal spring inside the plastic fitting (the plastic fittings also usually can slide right out, but there is no need). If you stick a small sharp 'pokey' object inside the hole where the wire is and wiggle it, the wire will easily pull right out. You can then stick your new wire directly from the ballast into the hole (stripped end of course, but most ballasts now ship with wires pre-stripped). No tools are required to stick the wire in, and once you stick it in you'll notice you can't pull it back out indicating the spring is holding it. Looks much cleaner and avoids all the splicing and wingnuts, other than on your main power inputs. A dental tool or small jewelers screwdriver work nicely as the 'pokey stick' but even better would be something insulated or plastic just because since it is electrical and if you don't certify de-energized with a meter.

Some of the older light fixtures are not compatible with energy saving bulbs so they’ll act like the ballast is bad but it’s on also always want to clean up your work and you did just that good job

I was initially hesitant to watch your video because it almost appeared as though it was the blind leading the blind. BUT, I must admit I enjoyed watching you. Great subtle humor had me chuckling. Most importantly, you helped solve my problem. Bravo to you! Keep it up. P.S. Can you inspire my wife to some independence?

Well, thank you for sticking with it! I aim to get to the audience of people who think they just *can't* do these things, and try to be as relatable as possible. A lot of people -- especially women -- are put off by experts and professional jargon ("Well, of course HE can fix a dripping sink, he's a licensed plumber.") They typically don't have a huge selection of tools to pull from, might struggle with the terminology, or just simply think they are not handy enough to do it. I try to be as relatable as possible, and show my screw ups so that other people don't make them. The motto is "If I can do it, you can too." It sometimes gets me some negative comments from people who don't really get it...so thank you for giving me a shot!

Nowadays it is so much easier to just take a picture of it that way you know exactly where the wires go. The other thing to do is just match the colors the same exact way you take them out. Always make sure you have the same size ballast that was in there with the right amount of wires that particular fixture that you have does not take a starter that's only on the older ones that were build in their early to mid 80s. You did a pretty good job for someone who has never done it before. One of the thing you should always be careful with is checking the power before you work on the fixture itself. If you are comfortable with working with it lies just make sure you don't touch the wires together and always isolated primary first and then do the secondary. Then reverse the process of putting it back together

For added safety, use a non-contact voltage tester/"tick tracer" to make sure the wires you're working with are no longer energized. It might seem dumb, but this is your own safety we're talking about. I'm an apprentice electrician and once got to feel a decent trickle up my arm when I was pulling wire out of what I was told was a de-energized load center at an intersection. Had I checked, I would have known that the leads were not completely dead. I still don't entirely understand what happened, as the foreman told me the circuit was dead (he mentioned induction, I believe). Thankfully, it did not hurt, but it did give me a jolt stronger than any coffee I have ever drank!

when working with a light fixture, all you need to do is turn off the switch to that fixture. No need to go to the electrical panel - overkill. but each to his own.

@@truthteller50 thats not true; a light switch only de energises the Line going to the luminarie, it doesn't de energise the neutral.

@@stevejobs5533 I thought you had died, but seems you’ve just moved to KZbin. 😜 anyway, and what is the concern of that? The switch blocks the flow of electricity. I’ve done it this way for years and never had an issue. Lights, fans, etc-all kinds of things on switched connections.

@@truthteller50 In the UK, fans usually have 3 pole switches; Line, Line switched and Neutral, so in this case you'd be fine as its completely isolated.

Use some masking or duct tape the wires inside after wiping the dust off. Yes, a tool belt helps but you never have what you need. Wire nuts have colors for different gauge wire connections. Replacement ballast never fit and likely longer so plan on using self tapping screws the ones with the little drill bit tip. Unfortunately, the ballast have become almost as expensive as a new fixture or two LED bulbs. They were coming down in price but remember they change A/C to DC inside in the part called a driver. Nice video. I heard a neighbor lady telling her neighbor how it cost them $550 for a new garage door opener! Top of the line is $150 and the brackets are there so 45 minutes. I would have done it for $250. Nice video.

Better name would be replacing a Ballast. Otherwise, please consider covering how to determine if the ballast is bad vs just replacing and hoping it works.
