I have been an electronics engineer for 47 years and I would highly recommend you DO NOT attempt this repair as it's highly dangerous and could give you a deadly electric shock or cause a fire in your building. It's a complete bodge job. Never mess around like this with a 240 Volts ac (or 110Vac) appliance. This video should really be removed. Just buy a new light bulb.

@@meking3258 If you’re finding 60 wtt equivalent LED bulbs for $1 each, then please do share your source with the rest of us. The average cost of such a bulb in the Northeast US is about $11 for four bulbs. Costs and quantities vary based on make, life hours, and other criteria. This is an average of almost $3 per bulb not including tax. Most places, including Walmart and Home Depot do not sell single bulbs. We are usually forced to buy them in multi packs. And the big lie is that they don’t last the hours marked on the box.We have had many fail well within life hours marked on the package. As far as this hack is concerned, I agree 100%: this is BS and dangerous. And yet Google has the balls to sensor political content… while morons like this are probably raking in thousands $$$ to promote content that can actually kill somebody…

Be aware that since the leds are in series, replacing one with a short (the foil) means the rest are individually handling about 11% more voltage than originally. You can get away with this much, but they'll run brighter and hotter than the were designed to, which will burn them out sooner. If you repeat the repair when another led goes, the remaining ones will be getting 25% overvoltage, and 42% if you do it a third time - which I suspect would burn them all out the moment you turn the bulb back on. But who knows, they might fool you and last long enough to melt the bulb housing and start a fire. If you decide to try that experiment do it someplace like the driveway, and definitely make a video to compete with the deep-fried turkey meltdowns.
@Panglos

Your choice is between having a bulb that doesn't work, and one that dies prematurely. Hmm... An LED bulb that gets hot enough to melt the housing? Not likely if you only do this once, which is all that's being advocated here.

@@Panglosa new bulb is a dollar. I don't think this is a good idea because of the way it's fixed. You're expecting non-soldered contact to last. A poor conduction can create a fire because resistance turns into heat.

Wrong. You need to get a bucket of water for electrical fires. To be extra safe, make a small fire, fill the bucket, and put it on the fire for a few minutes. Take your shoes and socks off and stand in it, because the bucket has been on the fire, the water will be warm (for your comfort) that should help also because the fire won't be able to burn your feet, so you can run away if there is an electrical fire. Speaking of which, make sure you replace the fuses in your electrical box with cutlery, as the better connection will ensure you get better quality electricity (you can use the water bucket on the fire while you do this. Make sure you record the whole thing with your phone, so you will get rich from any youtube videos you make of it :)

The same shop that sold you the tweezers and the tape would have also sold you small isolated pliers, which were much safer to use. Also you don't replace the bad LED tin foil but with a resistor of the same resistance (such a resistor costs a few cent). Finally putting super glue on top of things is totally pointless; super glue only works well as a thin layer between two hard materials; the correct glue would have been epoxy but even nail polish would have done a better job.

Hi there for those folks inspired by this video. Leds have non-linear voltampere characteristics (current increases dramatically fast with little increase in voltage), that is why they cant'be fed with volatge source directly. AFAIR there are 3 types of led lamps drivers: 1) SMPS which is usually a constant DC current source (the power supply variates voltage within a certain range to maintain stable current). This type can be easily recognised as the schematics has an inductor (coil) next to a driver chip. In this case it is ok to shorten 1 or several burnt diodes and the driver will still maintain sstable current. Please note that the power supply can vary valtage within a certain rage(depends on the schematics desing) . When you short led the power supply decreases the voltage to maintain stable current. At some point if you short too many leds the necessary voltage may fall below the power supply range and it will try but fail to provide proper led current and this will burn the diodes. Shorting 1 or 2 is usually ok. 2) Linear driver. This also maintains constant DC current (so current won't increase if you shorten broken leds) but it has lower efficency than the SMPS and the amount of heat it produces will not decrease if you shorten broken leds (due to the nature of linear driver). 3) The cheapest and the worst one is the driver where the leds feed directly from AC through a current-limiting capicitor. These lamps have 50/60 Hz pulsations - painful to look at. Note that it is not a constant current driver, it only limits the current, and shortening a led will lead to the increase amount of current so the burnt diode is to be replaced by a resistor (or u can recalculate the limiting capacitor). As this driver does not stabilize current, these lamps are sensitive to AC input voltage. The main reason for the led bulbs to die is heat. You cannot fool physics. Led bulbs normally don't have enough heatsink to remove heat from inside the lamp. Best leds can withstand high temps but eventually they wil degrade. Cheap leds will degrade fast. The vandors try squeezing as much ligh as posible for the price, often sacrificing leds quality/ proper thermal modes. The LED efficiency is decreasing with current increase and vice versa. That means that dropping current by lets say 20% you will receive ~18% less ligh but it will lessen the temperature and will dramatically increase life expectancy. I did this to some of my lamps and they seem cool and happy now. The same thing as in CPU/GPU industry - enthusiasts undervolt their devices far more often nowadays as it will increase efficiency and lower temps. The most important:Please don't try at home what you saw from this video, especially if you don't understand what is written here. You can die :) Led lamps are different, you can't just do this with any lamp, you must have some expertise in electronics and be completely aware of what you are doing and why. Please don't mess with electricity. It is totally not worth it. (If you ask why I did this - ok is part of my hobby and 15 years of experience in electronics.

Reminds me of the old style fuse box we had at home years ago. When the power goes out and you don't have a spare fuse, we would use a tin foil from a pack of cigarettes to wrap the fuse until we can get a new one in the morning. Many houses burned down using this method because it defeats the purpose of having a fuse in the first place from circuit overload. Things break down for a reason. Just my thought.

On another note, the capacitor on that board looked like it is close to done as well. The top was showing a little bulge and the shrink wrap label was pulling down from the top.

@@uploadJ - It would be a pleasure. Because I am feeling generous today, I'll give you three. Replacing that LED with a wire lowers the voltage drop and increases the current in that circuit. This will generate more heat and increase the load on the power supply, possibly beyond its design specs. Aluminum foil is a very thin conductor and not meant to carry a lot of current. There is an excellent chance of heating, possibly a fire. That aluminum foil was only taped down. Not the best possible connection and another source for heat. As the joint heats, it will loosen that plastic tape. That will loosen the joint further leading to more resistance and more heating. Could make a fire. This is a bad idea all the way around.

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) -----

The larger problem is that the aluminum is already oxide covered and even a worse conductor by just being laid on the contacts, not even sufficient pressure. However, it is most likely to just cause a fault where the bulb stops working again. It would not spark much if at all because of the low voltage difference between the contacts and even if it did, that heat would quickly degrade the tape and glue and open the circuit. It is different when the voltage is still mains 110V/220V and much more current capacity.

As the LEDs are obviously wired in series, each LED is dissipating a defined voltage. Take one of them out of the circuit and the remaining LEDs need to absorb that additional voltage leading to additional LED burning out. Just like the old incandescent Christmas tree lights with shunts built in.

@@lukasandrysik3666 OK, that makes sense. I initially had the same thought as the OP, because normally when you rig up LEDs you use a constant voltage and choose the resistor to make the current correct (accounting for the drop over the LEDs). In that case, removing the drop of an LED could be a problem....maybe a big problem if most of the drop was over the LEDs and not over the resistor (which is what you want for efficiency).

It usually involves using progressively thicker flat-blade screwdrivers and/or a rotary drill using a cutting disc.) To people claiming this is dangerous: please elaborate how as I do this myself (using soldering) and I never thought this could be unsafe. The voltage across these diodes is scaled down (voltage across each diode is less than 5 volts) and any short in the circuitry exposed on top where the diodes are located can only burn out more diodes and in the worse case burn out the transformer in the base. The heat generated by these light bulbs is minimal so the extra heat generated by the remaining LEDs as they run brighter because of the missing LED does not seem like a fire hazard. You can argue the effort is wasted since a replacement costs only a few bucks and the remaining LEDs will burn out faster because of the extra current but my question is about the safety risks involved.

@@GilmoreStrat Meh, disagree completely. I hate throwing away the LED bulbs, but in practically all cases where decent quality, major brand bulbs were suitable for the lamp/enclosure/etc they were placed in, they last long enough that their reduction in power consumption, more than pays for the bulb's cost. This was not the case many years ago when LED bulbs were much more expensive, but today most common bulb form factors are very inexpensive. However unlike what is shown in the video, most LED bulb failure I've observed were from the driver failing, not one of the LEDs, and often the driver in decent quality bulbs is potted and not reasonable to repair.

The problem with using old-world methods such as soldering a resistor of an appropriate value between those two pads, which, back in 1978 I would have done? Now-a-days it's a completely different world out there. No circuit board is ever 'wave soldered' like they used to be. What they do is, they use heat guns to heat up the circuit. They can't use lead-based solder, and they generally don't even use copper in cheap circuits like this one. They use robots to place a material which will bond the pad enough to make this cheap circuit seem to work a while. Then, they'll quickly heat the circuit with a heat-gun equivalent to make it seem as it if it bonded. The 'circuit board' (If one can even call it that) won't take any real heat, and will most likely just melt the thin 'circuit trace' when you apply actual heat to it. Cheap crap, such as this pretend 'circuit' isn't much better than the aluminum foil trick this guy is doing. Back in the world of 1978, yes, such a trick might work. Now? With pretend electronic circuit boards with pretend methods of 'soldering' the parts onto the board that disreputable manufacturers from China use, not caring whether you burn down your house (just as this guy, just to make a few pennies)? The worst of Capitalism.

This is simply dangerous as there are mains voltages on this circuit board, and you should never short out the mains supply on the bridge rectifier or main capacitor. In The UK and Europe this can be 220 - 250VAC across the input to the bridge rectifier and its output and capacitor can have 310 to 350VDC across them, and either can be lethal to the unsuspecting DIYer. Of course the voltages are much lower across the LED's, but nonetheless, this is a very dangerous game. Ask yourself, is your life worth the cost of just replacing the bulb? Also remember by shorting out 1 LED simply adds more load onto the remaining LEDs and they will burn out at a much faster rate than before, and potentially even cause a fire. This is just another entry in the 1000+ ways to die!

False, it depends on how the driver circuit was designed. Most are current regulated and it won't matter if it had been done properly (solder a bridge/jumper across the pads where the LED was). Instead of spreading FUD, whip out a multimeter and measure it for yourself.

@@walsakaluk1584 Not necessarily a waste of time. In areas where nobody can come in contact with them, I often de-dome bulbs like that, because the globe blocks around 30% of the light and in some cases, you don't even want the light radiated in a ~300 degree beam, but don't have a proper floodlight either or don't want the beam that focused. If you have the dome off anyway, it literally takes only a minute or two, to find the bad LED and tack on a jumper wire that you solder down. However if you can't do a good solder joint, it should not be done at all. Further, it is ridiculous for you to pretend that time is money when you are here watching this crappy video. by replacing the broken led with a wire you are increasing the voltage applied to the other diodes, decreasing their life. I'd do it just if it is an emergency situation where I need light asap.

Yes, but without this fix, the other diodes didn't work to begin with.

@@rnbj1189 I have a bin of old bulbs I may try resurrecting one day by removing dead LED's from each one and soldering in scavenged good LED's from a donor. That would make more sense. These things never last their "15000" hours. Lucky if you get 1500, I bet. And nobody has a light on for only three hours a day in the winter!!! :)

people getting their emotional feelings hurt is very much worse, than becoming homeless from a utube vid scam, or a vid that kills a family, you tube says so by removing dislikes

I could see this as a solution if your bulb goes out, you're out in the middle of nowhere, with no access to a store, and you forgot to keep a supply of spare bulbs, but otherwise, you could have replaced like 20 bulbs in the time it would take to do all that, and bulbs are only a few dollars a piece nowadays. So, unless you do only have the one bulb and no way to get another, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze IMHO. Just replace the bulb!
