1:32 says explicitly "maglev key switches." I can only speculate that the "tactile keys for typing" and "linear keys for gaming" are different strengths of magnets. While it's an interesting development, 1:35 shows some keys already unaligned with nearby keys. Did you watch the video?

Hi, there are USB ports on both sides so you can add a numpad. We are also planning to roll out a Flux numpad next.

A clear silicone overlay for a cheap tablet should cost a few dollars to make. If made well enough it would be usable but not very good compared to this. A lot simpler and cheaper though.. I experimented with a few matches stuck together to make a 3x3 staggered grid, cut out squares of clear plastic and thin strips cut out of balloons, I got it quite usable as a concept but the feel was not even as good as the roll-up silicone keyed keyboards. It needed some kind of click other than the key hitting the screen and the quite taught rubber was not going to stay tight for long. Fun though, The travel and spring back was good. I shelved it and it got broken. -- What's needed to make it strong and cheap is opaque key frames that hide (probably shared) springs/silicon pads. I'd be happy with 3mm key gaps and 2mm opaque border around each key as long as up to 4 symbols can be clearly seen.

It says you can plug a numpad directly into it, and the fact you can change to a number of different layers etc....If imagine you could easily switch to a layer that shows a full numpad If it's really that big of a deal. Otherwise for $25 you can get a nice mechanical wired or wireless numpad to plug in to the side the Flux.

Okay, the possibility of having a keyboard that could also function as a MIDI device has caught my attention. I wonder if how far you could push it, and if you could have a keyboard with not just dials & pads etc., but to actually include piano keys! Being able to have a normal keyboard and a MIDI keyboard complete with volume control and the like is extremely appealing to me! That would be awesome!

It would only be like 2 octaves, but it might be enough for what you do. A way cheaper solution is to get some small controller keyboard, like the Native Instruments M32 (Which I use) or Arturia Keystep? Then you get lots of on hands controllers, and good support in all major music software.

For me the most challenging feeling I think we can lose over mechanical keyboards is the key feedback, which could be solved via any kind of subtile haptic feedback. But we absolutely delete the delay on the travel that the key needs in order to make the "push" function, it's amazing.

The back light and processor are all in the top bezel so it rest of it runs cool, in testing the keyboard section only about 10C above ambient, similar to a laptop at idle.

Would be very nice if there was a community workshop (sort of like Steam) with custom keyboard profiles, specific functions, etc. and the ability to edit/customize from pre-existing profiles.. there's an infinite amount of potential for this keyboards functionality. I'm definitely excited to see what they can do with music software. There is space for this keyboard to transform into the already multi-functional "keyboard" to an entirely different production instrument with the multiple modules and remapable keys. I'm curious to see if this keyboard will be compatible with softwares like FL Studio and Logic.

Reminds me of the Optimus keyboard. They had a very similar value proposition. Never really took off because it was a solution looking for a problem. The biggest challenge with this paradigm is software. The hardware is easy enough to develop even for a hobbyist, but convincing software developers to implement all the shortcuts and icons is a massive undertaking that's not going to happen unless Apple, Microsoft or Google adopt this tech. That said, pouring sugar on an video of a coffee cup was a pretty genius demo, and picking Melodysheep for the soundtrack was a great move.

The beauty of this to me is that you can have any key do any function and display what exactly that function is on the key. It's possible to do similar stuff with a traditional keyboard, but the display for the keys makes it much less clunky and confusing.

I want this so much, From being able to change the image, video or interactive style behind the keys to hot swappable modules. Everything about this keyboard is innovative and yet so exciting to experience once it's available. And on top of that the fact that it can even show the Keybinds/Shortcuts on the keys itself is also super nice, the advantages for gaming listed would also mean that players based around movement are able to do more precise movement without the hassle of having the time it takes for mechanical switches to reset to their position to allow being pressed down again, and the easy maintenance would be super helpful to people that like to keep their keyboards clean but not have to take every switch off of their keyboard in order to remove debris from between the keys.

I love the screen/keyboard combo. I actually considered something similar with little LCD screens in each key, but your solution does seem better. The extra modules are a nice touch too. Now all you need to do is work on the ergonomics.

The great thing about keyboards is you don't need to look at them to control your computer. Also I'm concerned by how the keys would feel. The modules are interesting, but that market is already pretty well served. I'll be interested to see what reviewers have to say, hands-on.

If I could look down and see what function is going to be performed by executing a key combo, then I would actually use them.

​​@@Gooberpatrol66 People who do things like video editing, painting, programming, Photoshop(and many others) use keyboard shortcuts extensively. Keyboard is not just for basic text input. And they do memorize shortcuts eventually after repeated use. For example, when I'm drawing something, I use right hand for drawing, and I put left hand at Ctrl and Z position, and then I can reach common shortcuts like Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Shift+Z without ever looking down at keyboard. And I also don't usually look down at keyboard for many others, because my hands just remembers which one I should press. And besides that, there are people who use key combos to open certain applications(Win+E for explorer for example), or manage opened windows.

I want to say two things. Firstly, major kudos on the pristine approach to marketing this product. This video is simply glorious and certainly worked it's magic on me. But the product itself is just such a thing of beauty. I have been waiting for something like this for so long. I have ordered one, and I hope that Flux keeps support for this keyboard functionality well into the future as this has historically been an issue for keyboards which have screens, such as the Logitech G19 and Razer Deathstalker Ultimate. I guess time will tell. Can't wait to get mine!!

Even if it was a legit product, it has so many issues, ergonomics of keycaps will be really bad since they'd be forced to use flat caps, else there will be light distortion. Then unusability in portable settings due to abysmal power consumption. Seems like a vanity product, but productivity interested people will quickly see it won't be useful. There's a reason why old school keyboards have been there for forever, and why say IBM thinkpad keyboards are so highly sought in laptops. Highly optimized for feel productivity, no fluff

This wouldn't change much. It's just a keyboard that looks cool. Having unique dedicated keys are cool, but what's not cool is having to manually change layout if you're swapping between programs, browser tabs, etc.

@@KaffiRawr That's the thing though.. The keyboard is supposed to switch automagically whenever you open new software and have a profile set up for it. And for video editing/3d modeling, this *would* change a lot. One of the most well known tips for those types of software is to "learn the shortcuts to get faster", and having a keyboard that automatically displays shortcut/action names + images would certainly make learning the different shortcuts much easier. I just wish it wasn't fucking $450 without even adding on the extra panels..

This is completely possible and actually not hard to do, but it depends on every game company more than the keyboard company, for example if you want to do that on.. "League of legends", you have to hook into the game memory and lookup for the info, this may be against TOS of the game, so the legal way would be to expect Riot Games to develop some sort of "API" that communicates that info with the program without the need of memory reading, which lets be honest, not gonna happen. This applies to every company and game, you have the same two options to retrieve the information, the easy but illegal or shady option by reading its memory (which is against the tos of most games, cause it's like sniffing a network) or expect the developers of every game to make something special just for this keyboard which is not gonna happen. So for them its easier to just make some templates and let the user configure and customize it manually, the automation is not legally feasible. On the other hand there is apps that already provides some kind of api communication for external hardware, like photoshop or some DJ studios, cause they are already being used with third party hardware, that's why they can automatically hook into volume, equalizer, and custom sliders from adobe apps, it's because the company of the app itself already did that, not because of the keyboard company :( It's sad, but its how it works.

There are some really innovative ideas in this that I love. It's hard to justify spending $535+ on a keyboard though. Also, I love the dials and that you're planning to make a numpad, but I think you're really missing a simple module with 6 or 8 normal-sized keys. Excited to see how this does on the market! It would be so awesome if the software on this (or at least some part of it) was open source! Then, you could run your own programs on it to create more complicated images, shortcurt guides, comminicate with programs on the computer to get some sort of stat display and others. For example, in the editor Emacs, the key combos annot be easily predicted by just the keyboard, so it would have to be an emacs plugin sending the key descriptions to the keyboard. Also, if the keyboard comes with software for the computer, will it be available for linux or at least open source? If that's not possible, then at least publish documentation of the entire protocol, so we can write our own control software for linux!

Hi, this is the current plan: OS driving the display with be open source The key polling firmware will be closed but customizable via ulitity Desktop utility closed with API for extensions We will be looking into Linux support in the future, but you will ideally want to have access to a Windows or Mac computer for customisation of the Flux Keyboard and uploading and customising of layouts. As someone who backed this project, I'd just like to let you know that they have been brilliantly transparent with the development process. They have given monthly updates on the dot at the beginning of each month; describing changes, improvements, and reliability testing of both software and hardware. I can see this being very useful if it interacts with software like solidworks or Photoshop so keyboard shortcuts can be displayed on the keyboard itself. So if you hold control for example, it'll show you the different combinations of keys you can press along with Ctrl for different shortcuts

As a software developer, being forced to look at the keyboard is a HUGE productivity killer, and bad ergonomics. This concept looks nifty in appearances, not so persuasive with over 40 years of typing out code on computer keyboards. Once I got to the point of touch-typing, something like this has had very little practical value, outside of perhaps typing in a password and being slightly more assured your hands aren’t off their proper locations, such that you’ll type it wrong and risk getting locked out.
