What an honor to see Vintage Model Company expanding on my design by creating a balsa kit version. Keep up the great work James. I'm really looking forward to building and flying one of these kits for myself. Cheers!

A Cub you say...😲😍😍😍😍 I might have a bit of a cub fetish!🤣🤣 I’m building a Old Hobby Libby Super Cub kit that’s older than you!(I think 🤣) It’s been sitting in a box the whole time! I went a bit overboard adding ailerons, flaps, lights and working landing gear. 1st kit I’ve built in 20+ years!🤷🏻♂️🤘🏻

Full circle in the hobby, back to balsa and coverings. Suppose next you could put lightening holes in the side of the solid sheet panels and cover them in tape.

Just one note I thought I'd add for hand launching! I can see you're right handed and launched with your right hand. This leaves the control stick unusable whilst launching, the most critical part of flight. If you were to set the throttle with your right hand whilst holding the aircraft in your left. Then launch with your left hand, this leaves your right hand on the control stick (Mode 2). So if anything untoward happens in the first couple of seconds, you're instantly ready for action! You have a very good channel, that I've only just discovered. Keep up the great work.

Looks like a fun little beast that zips quite nicely. The resonance you encountered was likely wing flutter due to the torsional axis of the wing being aft of the aerodynamic centre (typically around 1/4 chord). A D-box spar (sheeting top & bottom from leading edge back to the spar) should eliminate this. Adding meat to the existing spar will help to some extent but not eliminate the problem. The light structure you have is good for slow flyers but not so good if you're trying terminal velocity dives. I liked the zero budget covering idea, but it probably did not add enough stiffness in this application! The buzzing also might have been control surface flutter, so check for any slop in the linkages. I hope you didn't break anything too expensive and it all goes well for aircraft #2.

Some great thoughts that echo our own ideas about fixing these problems. As you say, terminal velocity dives were clearly not going to work out without some more meat to the wing!

Love the idea about the tape covering, but thought you would have started at the trailing edge, so the overlap is less likely to open due to air pressure.
@vintagemodelco79364 жыл бұрын
Yes should have started at the trailing edge but clearly wasn't concentrating! 😂 This was one of the first times try this technique out. Will be making a video on it soon. 👍

Robert, I was going to say the very same thing! If you look at most WWII aluminium sheets airframe, they are typically covered from the bottom aft, then forward and up...

What is the empty air frame weight difference between this version and the foam board version?
@vintagemodelco79364 жыл бұрын
The foam version is 303g without a battery. This one is 375g, so slightly heavier but it is beefed up with lots of ply.
