Fishing for Albacore tuna off the Oregon Coast is one of the great things we have to experience in late summer. Over the past 15 years I've been targeting them with fly gear both on the troll and working to get them close to the boat to be able to cast to them. In our region the Albacore range in size from 10 - 45 lbs. and are absolute torpedoes when they slam the fly and head into the depths.
Generally the albacore are found in water temps over 61 degrees and in blue water, which isn't found right off the coast in Oregon. We usually need to travel 20+ miles offshore to find the right conditions. On this day we headed 40 miles off the coast of Pacific City, Oregon in our custom built Dory to see if we could locate some late season tuna. The search for tuna was our primary goal but we found much more wildlife throughout the day.
