Jaw spreader is something that could damage the fish. Never use jawspreader but learn the jawgrip. Safe and the pike naturaly opens its mouth
@marshhawk7302 жыл бұрын
i agree that was my experience with the jaw spreader but what in the world is the jaw grip

#9 or #10 definitely make the casting of big heavy flies much easier and will quickly land big fish . In the UK we use 4-6 foot of 25-35 IBS Fluorocarbon , this is not only to handle large fish , but the thicker , stiffer line helps turn over large flies . Then in front of that we use 18-22 inches of wire trace . There are many super supple kink resistant wires now , that you can tie knots in . We generally use 25ibs minimum . Please don't use 80ibs+ Fluorocarbon as Pike can bite through it . I had a good friend of mine used it , and lost a high double figure fish at the boat , when it bit through it . Please use wire . On the end of the wire , attach a small fastatach or egg snap , this means you can change fly quickly and easily . Large net with fine mesh or rubber mesh , long forceps , long nosed pliers , and a pair of side cutters in case you need to cut the hook . Large saltwater fly wallets are good for holding large Pile flies also . I like your idea of flattening the barbs as it makes removal so much easier . Most of all , please please please , release all Pike caught , quickly , remembering to give them time to recover fully , before letting go .

Respect thats how we also roll in the netherlands. We also use barbless hooks. But thats personal

@@marksmits1911 I also use barbless hooks . I don't land any less either , I much prefer them and thing it's easier to set the hook without a barb .

How do I actually cast those big, heavy flies? They just sort of bounce on the forward and back casts and the loops collapse.
@TheNorthernAnglerFlyShop3 жыл бұрын
Learning to cast these big flies can be a challenge and one of the reasons I really prefer fishing from the elevated deck of a boat. Line speed is essential and a double haul can really improve your distance. Thanks for the comment, I'll try and put out a video that covers casting big flies!

Jaw spreaders. Oh no.
@Cailean_MacCoinnich2 жыл бұрын
Crazy that you talk about "flattening the barb" to protect the fish, then suggest people use a jaw spreader. Fyi, jaw spreader(gags) are banned in most if not all British waters, because they cause so much damage to the fish.
