Fly fishing for big brown trout is most like bow hunting. It's all about knowing where big browns live, what big brown trout habitat looks like and when & where to target them in what habitat. Big brown trout simply aren't stacked in streams like this one and while there aren't many brown trout per kilometer, you can't simply run between likely water. Brown trout will nose into the subtlest water so long as escape cover is close at hand. In this video we take on Dave's favorite stream and share moments of joy and heartbreak in the tiniest of water with brown trout 6 to 9lbs. It's one heck of an epic brown trout stream.

I rarely comment on anything online. But this is absolutelyy the most beautiful film of trout fishing I have ever seen. Your style of filming perfectly captures the rhythm of fly fishing, relaxed yet focused with a very honest, even humble, presentation (yes, a sense of double-meaning there). You guys have achieved art.

Mission accomplished, absolutely. I'm a newbie to fly-fishing, but love the meditative, contemplative & spiritual aspect of it the most. In my view it's a very "Japanese" sport - it's all about the perfect throw, not so much about the biggest fish to catch (and if we get the really big one, we're setting it free again anyway). Where we live (nr. Mackay in Qld, Australia) we have a number of relatively shallow, rocky creeks with nice quiet rock pool areas (I suspect that's where the fish are ?) that look very similar to salmon rivers in Norway. Of course we don't have salmon in our creeks, but sooty grunters, which are formidable fighters & good on the plate, too. So that's my plan: hone my technique, build up a good set of useful (!!!) equipment, and catch some fish.

Wow, what a video! I was watching this at work and and was cheering you on for that first monster brown. I actually didn't realize this was in New Zealand at first and then when I saw the size of that trout was like " this ain't in the lower 48 haha". Love watching you guys work as a team, what an amazing dynamic to have on these small waters sight-fishing these huge trout. Beautiful cinematography and nice balance of action, success, failure and commentary. I do mostly solo POV vids and this is totally different (plus most of the wild trout I catch are < 10"). This type of fishing has to go on my bucket list!! Thanks for the amazing content!

Thanks so much for your thoughts here and for watching. This day came together in a pretty amazing way and we're so grateful that it did. Those fish provided such an incredible up close encounter for us, which we really live for. Seriously pulls at our heart strings now as we know that we still have many more months before we're likely step foot again in kiwi land. I hope someday you are able to experience the highs and lows of fishing in NZ. Pretty incredible stuff for sure.

Fantastic footage, you truly captured the "essence and total involvement of fishing". You become one with your environment and laser focused on your target. If you've done everything right, you are rewarded with a strike or take and the adrenaline rush that follows into the net of accomplishment. I would be over the moon with just one of those browns. This is a tremendous video. Beyond the video itself, what I love is the passion and intensity in both of you. You two have a love of fly fishing and it goes beyond that in the way both of you approach all of it. You two have a mutual connection that is incredible. Both of you are masters of the art. You observe, analyze, evaluate and then you target the fish. You are meticulous in every detail. I love how when you make a flawless cast and the fish ignores it. Amelia's reaction is almost like a personal afront that the fish rejected the offering! You two are so perfect together.

Thank you. Passion? Hell yeah! Intensity? Well, we really try to dampen it right down on camera - most would be shocked how we often really roll as we try to check our excitements :) Ah, we really love each other and are each other's best friends and simply love so many of the same things. We were really blessed to come together nearly 25 years ago now. And yeah! We expect the dang fish to eat our flies every time! :) It never 'always' happens but you have to be hopeful every cast, certainly. :)

Amazing video, videography and fishing on point. I love what happens at 15:15 even though it was missed. I don't think that was a second chomp as such what that was was the trout spitting the fly. Just shows how quick they can reject a fly once they know somethings up. Wonderful
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 3 жыл бұрын
It's a fun video for sure and a lot of neat stuff :) What happened was the fish ate and it was a double chomp - the reflex to the hook set gives the illusion of what you're talking point is but it isn't that. It ate, double-chomped then the reflex to the hook set left its mouth open and, being a straight-at-you eat, the fly was pulled straight out. It happens. Fun. Frustrating. All part of it :)

@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So there are some smaller trout in certain waters but in a water like this one only a few last and grow up to be big and here's why. Just imagine insanely heavy flooding with big waves just gushing through, followed by no rain and then intense summer heat that kicks in for months on end. Few trout survive all that, but the ones that do grow big.

Greetings from England. I fish for course species (such as carp, chub, barbel, bream and roach) , as opposed to game fish, and have very little experience of fly fishing. However, I can certainly appreciate the skill required to stalk fish and put a bait/fly in exactly the right place. Really enjoyed this video.

Greetings and welcome :) Ultimately we're all trying to do the same regardless of species - find a way to get that fish to eat what we're feeding them :) It's neat to hear that you're likely as passionate and love what you pursue as much as we do ours. Reality is that your fish get so big & tough and live in some really neat locations which make them tough buggers to get to net and hand :)

Fantastic video excellent quality camera work did justice to some absolute beasts . I would love to see more of the playing the trout , as lets face it apart from the fly presentation the fight is the buzz of fishing , it seems to cut to landing too soon when we are enjoying your ability to play the trout, regardless great video. Is it a stocked stream or are they 8lb wild brownies ? Also i noticed you use 4x tippet on a size 18 hook , that would be classed as heavy here in Ireland even for big trout, they didn't at all seem spooked by the heavy tippet or the indicator for nymphing. Most of the experienced anglers in Ireland no longer any indicator fly for nymphing as the fish are just so easily spooked , the fish will smell a rat and wont buy it. It takes a while to get used to but you develop a really delicate sense for nibbles on the nymph even in cloudy muddy water. Nevertheless it certainly didnt impact your fishing I guess its horses for courses.
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you for taking the time to comment :) That stream is one of a kind and while it looks like they are stacked in there, no, there's literally one trout every KM or two. It's a game of finding them, certainly. The balance of cutting off the fight is a tough one - literally attention span of the majority driven as you can imagine. KZbin allows longer video but certainly few are the people that want to watch the whole fight. We find it fun and fascinating but 3 of 4 don't, it seems. A balance for sure. Those are wild trout, numbers kept in check by severe summer drought annually. We do tend 3 or 4X on that stream because of the sizes in tight cover - almost impossible to pull out of cover on much less. And what you see aren't indicators - those are simply dry flies in a dropper setup. Quite a few rise to eat the dry so best give the fish a choice sometimes :) Naked nymphing kicks in once levels really drop and you can see a few instances of that later in the video. But, all the same, if the fish allow you to do/use a tactic or heavier gear, we go as far as they let us. Like fishing anywhere, you play your horses to the courses, as you say :)

Welvome and we're glad to have had you find us! The moments we've been able to experience and capture have been a huge joy to us through the years and if we can inspire a few people all the better.😊 We keep it pretty simple for weight reasons when it comes to the lenses as we put on white a few miles. We use an Olympus 75 - 300 mm for most of the close up work on fish rises as well as an Olympus 14- 150 mm for the scenic more wide angle shots.

we're there in northern hemisphere winter but that's NZ summer and no, by no means are water temps ok. With the state of the agriculture industry sucking the life blood out of tributaries and the propensity of summer drought stream temperatures in a lot of watersheds get above 25C and trout go doggo under rocks and ledges.

11:23 ... WOW....What a beautiful creature!! 😞 Nature have so much to give us...Until we'll don't understand it, we'll continue ruining and destroying some of the best places in the world! But watch the perfection of a deer at the dawn, in the wild.. Look at the resilience of the streams, the power of the water that makes its way between the rocks of the mountains, to descend more and more slowly to the valley floor, where in the morning you can see the humidity of the river rising towards the sky, and you can breathe it and smell it of the wood, and of the straw, until the sun rises, and everything comes to life: the flowers open in the sun, the insects fly, the lowland falcons fly, the wood and the prairie teem with life, the big brown trout come out of their holes in the cold waters with a slow current...Nature gives us all this, and we sacrifice it in the name of money, of resources extracted in an uncontrolled way, of being able to have everything now, without patience, without waiting...Because in nature they wait for their time, as it should be, but outside, in society...Well, everything must be frenetic, fast. ..Time won't wait...We will find ourselves unable to appreciate the enormous quantity of rare gifts that the biodiversity of this planet gives us. As far as I am concerned; every day on the river is a gift, every excursion is a possibility...Because Nature has one damn important quality: it never ceases to amaze you. Fish on!😉 And compliments for your videoes...They are beautiful...
