This episode of the Far Bank Fly Fishing School series focuses on the joy of fishing in small rivers and creeks. For some, it is all that is available to them, for others it is an escape to a more personal, more intimate location - a place to lose and challenge oneself. Whatever reason it is, fly fishing in small creeks requires new skills, adaptations of casts, unique fishing techniques, and a different approach to regular sized rivers.
Whether this is your first-time fishing a small river and need to know how best to approach one, or an experienced creek angler, but would like to get a few new tips on how to catch more, and bigger trout in a creek, this episode is for you.
In this episode we talk about what a creek is, discuss why you would choose to fish in a small creek, look at the best equipment you will need for fishing in such small rivers, learn some unique casts that can get you out of really tight situations, and dig into the essential fishing techniques that all creek anglers need to know.
At the end of this episode you will have learned all you need to become a highly successful creek angler, be able to approach such small rivers with utmost confidence, and know exactly how to cast in the most overgrown of rivers, and how to winkle a fish out of the smallest pocket.

Very interesting how you cut down the leader. It seems so simple but I have never thought to do that. Thanks!

Really love your videos, just wish redington was a bit higher quality gear. Every one of the 4 redington brand fly fishing items (totalling $1200) have failed in a major way, meanwhile A WALMART 50 dollar rod/reel is out performing them.

Sorry to hear about that. Did you email the CS team - eos@farbank.com? That's probably the best way, or a phone call too...

I have watched and been a fan of these for a while now. that being said Chapter 3 in this video is really sad and misleading. The only people that really claim you need a different rod to fish different waters are people selling rods!! To fly fish a small stream you need a fly rod. You do not need a different rod from the one you use everywhere else. You do not need a small rod. This idea is damaging our sport by making people think it is too expensive to buy all the gear. It is just not true that you need a small rod to fish a small stream. I can make the case that a 9 foot or even a 10 foot gives me advantages over a small rod. I can dap with a long rod, and I can Bow and Arrow cast much better with a long rod. I can reach over stream side brush, and I can steeple over bank side vegetation. Please for the love of the sport and for the integrity of your companies please stop spreading this mis information. Use the rod that you have and if you want a small rod by all means buy one, but for most of us it will not make fishing any more fun, then just getting on the water and catching fish. Thanks

That’s all well and fine until you’re standing under short trees on water that is also crowded with riparian plants and you can’t get a cast out. It’s not so much about the size of the water but how overgrown small water can get. I commonly fish my 10’6 3wt euro rod on a specific piece of small water, but this is because this section of water is also in a cow pasture, so plenty of room for casting. A shorter rod is most definitely needed in some situations. Also you’re expecting the ROD PEOPLE to NOT try to market and sell more rods? Doesn’t sound very reasonable.

You are missing the point of my post. I have never seen someone that could keep a cast that low. If you need to be under riparian brush, a bow and arrow cast is better, and a longer rod is superior. A short rod isn’t going to help you keep a cast that much lower. As I also stated, if you want to use a short rod go ahead but you surely don’t need one. A 9 ft rod or longer In almost all circumstances is better. Also the comment on the video is that to fish small water you need a small rod. That is false and misinformation. If you want to market rods fine, but let’s not pretend you need a specially rod for everything. That hurts the sport by making people think it is more complicated and expensive than it is.
