In this video, Brian Flechsig compares the 'nipping' quality between several high end nippers. Which ones are as smooth as butter and which ones don't stack up to their price tag?
Bottom line is this- if you are just cutting mono/tippet.......THEY ALL WORK so you don't NEED to spend this kind of money on nippers. But you can if you want!!

Nice to see a fair review of fishing products and I appreciate your honesty by saying that people don’t need to spend a ton of money to cut line. Three years ago my 7th or 8th pair of nippers at the time failed on me over and over again. By that I mean they wouldn’t cut my line or tippet on the first and sometimes second try. Frustrated I stopped at a “ Family Dollar” thrift store and bought a pair of 64 cent nail clippers thinking that I would buy another pair of nippers later when I had time to read up on what was available. That was 3 years ago and I just returned from a 21 day fishing trip in the rockies (third trip since April) and the 64 cent nail clippers still work just fine. In case I need a needle I carry a large fly on my vest but it’s rare that I need to use it. Thanks for the review, good info.

OK, but how do they cut actual butter? I'm guessing not well. $105 clippers? How much other flyfishing stuff can I get for $105? Glad to know there are people that will buy those! wow.

James Cooper You can cut butter with virtually anything....just the same as mono. Nothing wrong with buying a premium tool, but not required, as he says here.

I don’t even carry nippers anymore. Bigger fan of the dr slick hemo’s with the cutting surface and pin. They work just as well for cutting line and I can use them to cut yarn too

Can be tricky to get the really close cuts on small stuff though. We still carry nippers as do most. Thanks for watching.

I had my Orvis nippers for one day, it got snagged when I was cutting through some brush which I didn’t realize at the time, now I have $7.00 pair from China. Just saying. Someone out there probably got one for free!

I have Orvis branded abel nippers. They came bundled with the Orvis branded pliers abel made for Orvis a few years back. Work great but I agree the poker is hard to get to sometimes. Another nipper I like is the fishpond ones. The poker on that one is much more accessible.

I think my orvis nippers are the only piece of equipment that's on me every single fishing trip. Fly fishing, centerpin fishing, spin fishing.... it doesnt' matter the target species, or technique, if there's one thing consistent, it's that you've got to be able to cut line, and it does it every time.

Nice review but I wish you had included Dr Slick for comparison. I bought a Simms nipper and it’s been relegated to my rain jacket. I also bought an Abel TU nipper and didn’t like the pin on it. It’s around somewhere but I couldn’t tell you where to find it. I went back to Dr Slick (slanted) nippers and for trout fishing with fading up close vision and hands that get a little stiffer every year, the Dr Slick nippers are the easiest for me and they cut really well. I typically get a new pair every year or two although I probably don’t have to .... it’s only about $15 and I know they will be sharp and cut tippet with minimal effort. I wish someone would invent nippers with 3 Red LEDs focused around the cutting blade and a fly threader tucked away in a scabbard in high end waterproof aluminum. That would be worth $85.

You know, why not just buy a $5 pair of nail clippers? That's what I've used to cut line, even though its small test, 20 is the biggest I've done, but I don't think they would have a problem. Only drawback I can think of is that they don't have a pin to clear the fly holes with. What do you guys think?
@Madriveroutfitters

Brian does point out that you don't HAVE to spend big money on nippers.....but you should at least buy nippers not fingernail clippers. 1. They are designed for fingernails and not mono. The hardness of the blades is different. 2. We don't sell fingernail clippers. We sell nippers. Therefore, he's not going to do a video promoting fingernail clippers. That's just how this works. 3. Yes, they don't have the needle or pin to clear eyes 3. Support your local fly shop (even if it's your local online shop) 4. We sell nippers designed for mono for $4.95 so why pay .05 more? Thanks for watching!

Mad River Outfitters Ahhh ok I didn't know that you sold them that cheap, I guess common sense would say that not all are that expensive. Shoulda done my research. It is nice to know that (being in my late teens) I can afford a nice pair of nippers though.

I've used both (nippers and nail trimmers) and both work fine. The only thing the nippers have over the nail trimmers is that their cutting edges are usually straight, which can make it easier to trim right up close to a knot, like you'd do for an FG or modified albright. It's not a real big advantage tho - for the cost, nail trimmers are a good option I reckon.
