Nice video. Kind of normal for the area to have one or two fish for a day's fishing. Not a huge amount of fish in Taranaki rivers. Patea is one of the few rivers in the region where rainbows are stocked. Tightlines.

Hey! Great video. I'm in the Taranaki area right now and I just returned from a three hour fishing session on some small streams, all great looking and very fishable...but just like you, I haven't seen any single fish, no sign of them.

Yes, I'm not sure what the problem is. I read somewhere that maybe there are some emissions from the volcano that kill the fish. If these happen frequently enough, the fish can't recover before the next event. The only river where I found fish in that region was the Patea River, but there may be others. Perhaps try further from the volcano.

I am not surprised the dry worked, NZ trout are true opportunistic feeders, there are times subsurface or surface will work better and larger or smaller flies though the differences are only incremental and more to do with water clarity or light levels.

Thanks! It was a tough trip that one, but I eventually got a nice one.
