Fly Fishing Penns Creek

Penns Creek is known as a trophy trout stream in Pennsylvania. It is also known to hold large native brown trout. In this episode Steve & I head up to Coburn, PA and stay at the Haven Valley Guest Cabin.
On the first day, we fished the horse shoe below Coburn on tunnel rd. And on the second day we fished Bald Eagle State Forest, West of Ingleby, PA.
We Fly Fished using streamers, nymphs, and dry flies. The Brown Hare's ear nymph seemed to work the best.

Have fished Penns for almost 50 yrs., It is a treasure for sure. You complained about too many guys, come up here in early spring it is a zoo . People putting vids on internet in the last 5-7 yrs have made it very crowded. The big chub you guys caught are called by us natives Penns Creek Tarpons. I fished the best days of this magnificent stream when after the hatches were done there was hardly a soul to be seen. Things have changed since the go pro explosion

Tip: You just need to check the water levels before you go. They were massively low. Penns isn’t easy when it’s in perfect condition, so when it’s super low, you have to be stealthy or you will struggle. Those chubs were fallfish, btw. Tight lines.

Thanks so much for the info. I hope to get back up there one day when the water picks up a bit. Also, I have a bad habit of calling fallfish - chubs. I got so used to catching them in the brook trout streams when I was younger that I call all fallfish & chubs - chubs. I will make sure to use the proper name next time. Tight lines buddy!

Penns is tough to tame. First couple trips there I managed 1 brown each trip. Your levels were so low. Probably 50-100 below normal CFS. Use USGS sites to fish water on the averages or close to it. Also I’ve done better on penns to fish the faster pocket water with nymphs. Sides of boulders produce. Good luck

So there has never been drought before? I live 25 minutes from Penns and winter fishing has been great. Our wild browns are fighters and will be fine.

I'm fishing penns tomorrow morning. Water is up and looks great. Will be hitting a wild stretch of stream. It definitely was low this summer but is just fine. I live very close to the head waters. Looked great this afternoon. So dont be afraid to come try again.

I went to college at Penn State. I know that river. There are a lot of other streams nearby almost as good. I don't know if you get there often, but the green drake hatch is a must do. Try blue lining. It's worth the effort.

The green drake hatches are crazy some times .. if you hit a nice nite it is extremely common to still be nailing fish at 11pm and later I think last year drake hatch was strongest last week of May

“Penns CREEK” isn’t a River. If it was we’d call it “Penns River”. You’re correct that there’re several trophy trout streams in the State College, PA area
