Fly Fishing South Padre Island On The Sand Lower Laguna Madre Texas

Walking in on the sand on the bay side of South Padre Island, Texas, has always been a treat for me. There is always something to see. If not, there is the great exercise that comes from a long walk (5 miles in this case) in pretty desolate surroundings.

Fly fishing the sandy side of South Padre Island has always been easy access and we know access rarely gets easier over time. I think someday we, or future generations will reminisce about how easy it WAS to get a fly fishing fix on the South Padre bayside sand. Progress comes.
This video is heavy instruction and has no fish porn in it, sorry to say! I think there are many variables that make this a tough place to catch for a lot of people. I will try and get back in July to see if it gets any easier!

Thanks for the video. I fished there occasionally about 25 years ago when I had a 4WD. Exactly like you described it, lots of mosquitoes, sting rays and crystal clear water. Mostly blind casting if the wind was up, but able to sight cast if calm. Best time for me was in the morning with the sun to my back. As I recall I only caught redfish (gold or silver spoons) and flounder at the grass line. Never caught a speckled trout there. A beautiful place.

I am thinking this is a prime example of sharing the love, and no downside to mad crowds rushing in and mucking up the place? I issued a challenge to some fly fisher who doesn't like sharing, but ... his comment is gone. I wish he would get back to me here! ASAP! This isn't some magic potion of a place. Watch the video and you will realize IT ISN'T EASY!

Yes, but not while I was down there last year. I should have hit it harder! And Larry Haines said they are early and late day mostly - which I did not know at the time. Check out that Haines Interview 2 - lots of fish knowledge there.

Yeah. The “entrance” at that spot is for 4WD with ground clearance. I’m 4WD just not enough clearance.

Shannon: I'm from Canada and have spent a few months on the Sand on two different occasions. Great place. Some successes, some failures. Love the challenge of the shallow clear water and spooky fish. Like walking around out there and usually see no one whish is a bonus.. Your video captures what the place is like. Kind of wish you didn't make it, however, you are promoting your business and region. Hope to get back Fall 2023...maybe coffee/ fly shop will be open by then. Robert
