Wow that video is pure gold! I was wondering about the very issue you are talking about. My casts mostly go smoothly, but sometimes I had head crashes. Thinking about it, it was mostly when trying to cast small flies for a long distance. I thought adding a small, less wind resistant fly will help with the casting, but apparently I was very wrong. Thank you for showcasing the issue and presenting an explanation as well as a solution.

I swear you've been spying on me. Every one one of your videos this summer seems to address a problem I've had the previous week. Thanks for all the tips!

Strangely enough, I got back from a casting session this am trying out a new Igniter 7wt. I tried a few lines, most having a really aggressive taper and got the crash / rebound you mention in your video. I had a tip which I ended up paring back a bit and voila...as per your suggestion , it works. I am watching this video a few hours after my morning session so really surprised at the timing. Thanks for putting up such an informative video.

This helps a lot! I just bought a 9 wt setup and my leader keeps hooking to the left (im a right handed caster). I was impressed with the distance I could achieve, so I know I'm adding way to much power. Nice to see a pro explain what is actually happening. Now to apply the most important principal I've learned in fly fishing: less is more.

I have SA’s Titan Taper on my 6 Weight Sage Foundation. I noticed when I try to cast small heavy Tungsten Woolly Buggers my casts are out of control. I 100% agree that this happens due to the fly having ZERO air resistance. Any pointers for this or is it just part of casting heavy flies? I have these style tapers on my small mouth bass rods and cast them great but the flies I use are extremely air resistant. Great information as usual thanks Peter!

I have a video on casting heavy flies as they do require a different approach to casting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHOrqn2ietClaM0
