another idea for the timing of the hook set. I was a bass/lake fisher before I got into river fly fishing. And there is a BIG difference in the hook set. Like most things there is a learning curve. More time on the river is the key. But, to shorten that learning curve watch Alex and Spenser fish in their videos and watch other fly fishing videos. You will see how others do it and you will get it. A few hook sets and you are a golden.

I not sure others have this problem when setting the hook, that is the "length of line" on the water. i find the more line I have on the water the harder or faster I have to lift. I would say practice lifting your line off the water at 15, 20, & 30 feet. Do it the same way for each length. I think you will find that from 15' to 20' you won't see much of a time difference. HOWEVER, I find a timing difference when going from 15 to 30 feet. Practice this in the middle of the stream/river so you don't get hung up on trees behind you.

Been there, done that! If I hadn’t had days that I was the one doing the catching I probably would have sold all my gear by now. Your comment is a perfect definition of fishing. Tx for sharing

I get stumped when you start mentioning different types of flies (midge, scud, mayfly, etc) can you pop up pictures of the types you are talking about?

winter is tough for me, i come across water that looks perfect for fish in colder months. i adjust my depth and tie and egg or some small midges and cant find a bite. a few times a threw on a streamer and a small slipshot i was able to get a smallie. was i just not matching the hatch as well as i could have been? there were even a few surface feeds but couldnt see anything flying around

There are days when nothing works. Maybe it's your presentation. Maybe its your casting. Maybe itsy the flys. Go home. Have a good evening. Eat a good meal. Sleep a goid sleep. Try again another day.
