Fly Fishing Wisconsin Driftless Spring 2024 - Part I

April 2024. We got in early to Grant County area in SW Wisconsin and decided to squeeze in a few hours of fishing before heading to the cabin. The rain came about halfway through which helped a little bit with the low clear water conditions.

Back in the 80s when we were in college a few buddies and I used to spend our weekends hitting all of the SW WI streams for trout. We used tiny spinners and hauled a lot of fat trout out of that area. The streams were so thick with trout a dinner of fresh grilled trout was a guarantee.

Sounds great. I’m not an expert on Driftless streams but I think the trout sizes and numbers have probably declined since the 80s, based on the average I’ve seen. Still great fishing though

@@w.driftinflies We definitely noticed a massive change in the fishery starting the early 90s. Every pull out and every bridge on every stream had a vehicle parked. In our heyday we’d see one maybe two other fishermen the entire day.
