A Complete Guide on How To Fish Flies With A Spinning Rod! The Drop Shot Fly Rig is an absolutely awesome way to suspend flies in various levels of the water column to entice trout (and other fish) to bite! It's incredibly effective in rivers and creeks, but also works well in lakes and ponds. I've used this rig numerous times over the past couple of years, and have caught hundreds of trout and bass with it, as well as catfish, carp, sunfish and tilapia. This really is the best way to "fly fish" with a spinning rod!
Thank you for watching!!

Awesome video! What size drop shot weights do you use and what kind of flies do you find work best?
@KevinRapkochFishing
@KevinRapkochFishing 5 ай бұрын
I appreciate the positive feedback! I keep 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 oz drop shot weights on me, and adjust based on the depth and flow of water (using the least amount of weight necessary to keep the fly where I want it in moving water, or to at least slow the movement of the fly down). If I'm fishing really small and shallow creeks, I just tie the tag end around a split shot (as drop shot weights are often too big for tiny creeks). As far as flies, I suggest keeping the following on you: beadhead nymphs (prince nymphs), wooly buggers, Caddis flies, and leech patterns. 🙂✌️🎣

@KevinRapkochFishing

I don’t like using the palomar for drop shotting. I prefer a dropper loop tied tight. Also, I don’t remember if you mentioned it, but it works better with a fly with a straight or upturned eye.

What about winter months when the trout are closer to the surface?
@KevinRapkochFishing
@KevinRapkochFishing 9 ай бұрын
You can adjust the depth of the fly by using a longer (or shorter) amount of tag end under the fly (the section that ties to your weight). That said, I've found that trout in rivers/creeks, even in winter, are still generally holding to the bottom of the water column as they want to rest below the main current.... Unless there is a topwater hatch. In that case, with a spinning rod, your best bet would be using a clear casting bobber, and tying an emerger fly or dry fly 20-30 (or more) inches under the bobber.
@brettmorton6513

Kevin, ty, how many feet off the bottom this time of year, and would you work it a little bit or let it sit?@@KevinRapkochFishing
@KevinRapkochFishing
@KevinRapkochFishing 9 ай бұрын
@@brettmorton6513 in slow moving water or lakes/ponds, I definitely work it by reeling in slowly and lifting/lowering the rod (use the weight to feel the bottom and play the fly like a swimming nymph or bug). In faster moving water, I cast it upstream, then reel at down river at the pace of the current (to replicate a drifting nymph/bug). 🙂✌️🎣

🐟🎣 Thanks for the great video Kevin. I'm not a fly fisherman, but I saw a basic beginner fly fisherman limit out last night with 5, 15-18" saltwater speckled trout on a pier under lights in 4' deep Port Lavaca Bay Texas. Tho most the trout went up the river due to cool fronts, he showed me that saltwater fish love a properly presented fly lure. He said today he'd go to Port O'connor nearer the Gulf and wade fish for 20-28" red drum. I got home last night thinking, wow that guy is the epitome of a fisherman, and what a thing of beauty it was to watch him hauling in those saltwater specs with a fly rod. Do you think casting a saltwater fly with a split shot 3-4' above a fly on a spinning reel and rod would catch fish?
@KevinRapkochFishing
@KevinRapkochFishing 10 ай бұрын
Yes, I've definitely caught fish with the exact rig your are describing. But, if you can't cast the flies far enough with the split shot above the fly, you'll want to do the drop shot rig I show in this video, with a heavier weight tied below the fly. I've caught so many fish with flies on a spinning rod.... It's definitely doable!! 🙂✌️🎣

@@KevinRapkochFishing Thanks for the quick reply and info Kevin, and the name of the awesome (Palomar knot) I've been using for years. I'll try my weight and fly both ways and let ya know the outcome. Also, if I'm in deep enough water 4-5' IYO, how would tying the fly above the weight and in about a 2' L away from the line float and present? 🐟🎣
@KevinRapkochFishing
@KevinRapkochFishing 10 ай бұрын
@@davekanak as long as your not using a heavy fly (which would cause the fly to sink), that fly should just suspend right on the strike zone for fish, about in the middle of the water column. If you are using heavy/weighted flies, then just pitching them under a bobber will work too! If under a bobber, use a split shot above the flies to make sure the flies stay down. 🙂

Thanks for watching and commenting, Alex. Yep, I've used the same rig on a fly rod... It works best with short roll casts, but can be super effective at fishing deep pools!
