Thank you for a good video, now that I'm retired, I'm trying to improve my piano skills a little bit to sound "jazzier"! I was always aware of George Shearing and his talents even 50 years ago, but my knowledge took a quantum leap when George was in town (Denver) and came to the radio station I worked at for an interview! (around 1973) So suddenly it was Don Mueller chatting with George Shearing for 17 minutes! (it's on youtube) I decided to impressed George with the fact that "The Shearing Sound" became a familiar phrase, even a music library we used at the station had one of their commercial music beds named as "The Shearing Sound". He was impressed -- so impressed that he sued the record company $100,000 for copyright infringement!! But I've since come to realize that this guy was a musical genius, he could play all sorts of styles!

So THIS is what I loved about George Shearing. I'm so-as the Brits would say and as fits perfectly here-GOBSMACKED that I couldn't figure out what Shearing was *doing* that made his playing so attractive to my (guitarist's) ear. And of course I heard it in Nat King Cole's playing and a couple of others' as well, but I had no idea there was a name for it-"Locked Hands." It really is such an incredibly beautiful use of the piano and what I have secretly always wanted to be able to sound like on the piano. Alas, starting basically in my fifties, (now that YouChewed is here to assist), assures that I will never be able to play it anywhere near your prodigiously talented level. But I can damn well try! Since it now has a name, I can now research all there is to be found out about the "locked hands' technique, and the best place to find out no doubt will be your website!

Thanks...enjoy learning this technique. Milt Buckner was George Shearing's and Nat King Cole's inspiration. But they took it to another level and everyone after that (Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal, Oscar Peterson, etc.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6i1kGyKYsurb5Y George Shearing created a whole new jazz quintet sound by having the guitar and vibes double the melody line in octaves and the piano played the melody and chord in the right hand and the melody doubled an octave lower in the left hand. Great , thank you . I had been pratcung the C scale with this style , also in drop two. I've never heard clarified how to play a whole song . Especially what to do when the chord changes. Like when you are on d minor , you use D minor and c# diminished . I've been trying Polka Dots and Moonbeams in F , which has a scalar melody too . Great stuff. I understand that from a diatonic standpoint you build these chords as basically alternating 6th voicings and diminished chords. My question is when harmonizing a melody do you use the scale (or its overall key) of the chord that would be occurring during that point in the melody OR do u harmonize based on the overall key of the song. I'm inclined to think the former based on this: Fly Me To - seems to be coming from a C Major but The Moon - is coming from an F set of these locked hands style chords. Am I making any sense and if so/not, are u able to answer my question?

+Edward McKenna Good question, and you're right, it is the former. The melody of the song is diatonic (fits a c scale or a natural minor scale except for a couple of notes, one being the G# which alters the V chord of Am tonality so that the V is dominant and the G# is the "leading tone".) However the diminished chords work well as approach chords to whatever chord you are moving to because the melody note is a "passing tone" rather than a chord tone. So the passing chord or approach chord (is this case diminished) then has a particular relationship to the scale of the chord it is approaching. Otherwise you could play all the passing chords voiced exclusively with chord tones of the c major scale and the effect would not be anywhere near as interesting. Do you understand?

+Kent Hewitt soooooooo basically straight up chord scale stuff. If it's a minor chord u play min7 on the chord tones and diminished in between. If it's major (or dominant) chord tones get sixth voicing and non chord tones get diminished chords. Lastly, approach new chords with the diminished of the anticipated chord as opposed to the previous chord. Am I correct? I just need to understand the system.

+Edward McKenna The diminished chord should have an approach (chromatic) relationship to the chord it's approaching ie. Gbo moves to Gm6. It can also approach from above like Abo - Gm7. There's other varieties that work differently.

Thanks for the affirmation. Barry Harris talks about this in his diminished 6th scale video. As your ears become more trained to the intricacies in chords, you begin to hear that most of this sound is 6th chords and diminished chord approaches which are really a form of V-I progressions and inversions of same.

Who thought of and decided that it would be alternating 6th and Diminished chords throughout a song? I would think it would be the exact chords in a song. I can understand that the 6th and diminished gives it a unique sound. Isn't bebop the same style?

Milt Buckner is credited for developing this concept. It has been used by composers and big band arrangers for many years.as a way to harmonize a melody line with full sounding chords. The melody is brought out by having it played in octaves. Milt wrote for big bands and used this technique to write for the horn and reed sections. Thanks for the detailed explanation of inserting diminished chords on non chord tones. I'm self taught from books, and the only previous exposition I read on alternating diminished with chord tones kept to one scale, the major be bop scale, for example presented by Marc Levine. So I was stuck with the C major / A minor Be Bop scale and the Ab note for the whole tune. I see you used a different diminished chord from the first for the next non chord tone, the fourth note in the melody. Now it makes sense to my ear. But I think the different diminished chords define different scales. Maybe not for Locked hands, but what about for an improvisation over that diminished chord?

+David Swaddell The diminished chord is approaching the next chord so the theory has to apply whether ascending or descending in the melodic line. Improvisation is different in that I prefer to simplify the chords so that the ideas will flow better. Thanks for the comment!

Very nice. I notice that, in your left hand, you play the black keys with your thumb. Normally, I only play a black key with the thumb when there are no other options. Is your choice strategic? (Does it make it easier for you?)

John, you know I just went to the piano and tried this and I didn't use just the thumb in the LH. It must have been what I preferred at the time or was most comfortable for me at the time. I always say... use fingering that works best for you. I can make suggestions... but it still is a personal thing. John, you know I just went to the piano and tried this and I didn't use just the thumb in the LH. It must have been what I preferred at the time or was most comfortable for me at the time. I always say... use fingering that works best for you. I can make suggestions... but it still is a personal thing. I kind of "fudged" it, which means I was thinking of the lower octave and at the last minute decided to play the melody note in the upper octave. So it wasn't clean...and rather than recording the whole song over again, I let it go, because I liked the way I played the rest of it. Now, you showed up and caught me. Will you forgive me? Stube Ring Use the pedal sparingly and carefully with this technique so you get clarity from chord to chord. Only when the tonality is the same can you sustain. I like to use the pedal for a legato sound in jazz, but have to be careful using it too much w/ locked hands. Your ear will tell you what sounds good. Thanks for asking!

+Carroll Valenzuela Thanks!.....yes, depending how the diminished chord is functioning, it is often the upper 3/4 of a dominant 7 b9 chord. Therefor A7b9 would function like a C# or Db diminished chord resolving to D minor. There's no b13...that would be augmented. The diminished chord often would substitute for the dominant chord but move chromatically in the bass. See my video on Here's That Rainy Day.

+neuromantoo You're right Thanks for pointing that out. . Red Garland could be considered as one of the underrated piano giants just like maybe Hank Mobley on tenor. I think of Red's signature sound as the left hand block chord supporting the octaves with harmony in the right hand. He certainly was great and I should listen more to him...which you obviously do...thanks!

How do you choose the chords in between the leadsheet chords.. There are different options you could choose for each melody tone... Just try and error, see what you like or do you always use that diminished principle? Thanks!

+Stefan Höfer There are quite a few options. Often it's V7 dominant chord or a dominant a 1/2 step above the chord or below. Also the II -V -I progression is common. The other option is a diminished chord above or below. It could also be a minor 7th chord a half step above or below. If you use the download tab on my website you'll see a lot of these options in the scores. Also check out my latest video which talks about approach chords.
