Hi Danny, the best grayling video next to Tjuonajokk video. You caught a grayling on that marabou streamer... It could never happen here on my river where grayling are very picky about what they eat... Once I saw a video from norhern Finland and I was really shocked about the fly that that fly fisher picked. It was a palmer. The body on this one was made of yellow dubbing (probably beaver dubbing) with black palmering. Really a strange fly and he caught a big grayling on this dry palmer fly. I could not believe it... What is that pattern and which kind of insect does it imitate??? For those very picky grayling in our Jizera river in Czech, I always had to be very careful what dry fly or nymph to pick (tie on) My most favorite dry flys for grayling are these: Olive dun (Baetis rhodani), Blue dun (the body may be ribbed with yellow thread), Red spinner, Iron blue dun (IBD), Red tag, Blue tag, Yellow tag, Coch-y-bondhu, F-Fly (Marian Fratnik´s pattern - peacock body, CDC blue dun color wing - this one is very killing!!!) all in tiny sizes 16-22, tied on TMC 100 or TMC 101 dry fly hooks... My biggest three grayling were 45 cm on Red Tag dry 16, Goldhead olive nymph 14 and I do not remember the third succesful fly... As the nymphs for grayling, my most favorite are these ones: Olive nymph tied in Ritz style, Ritz D nymph (this one is very killing also for chub and trout, it uses a peacock herl for body and thin copper wire between the body and the head - this is probably the best working nymph ever for a lot of fish species- Mr. Ritz was a German fly fisher and probably a genius too), Goldhead olive nymph etc. As the flies for stillwater brook trout - I have only one favorite and it is Partridge and Orange wet 16 - no brook trout can resist this one... As for the stillwater rainbow trout dry fly, it is Buck hair cinnamon sedge - it is very durable and unsinkable fly and works really well for rainbows in summer although it looks really ugly... I also fish my featherwing New England streamers in stillwater, never fish these patterns: Worms, Woolly Buggers, Zonkers, Lures, Blobbs, Boobys etc. All of these freaky monsters are very cheap looking and unfishable for me... When I do not like the looks of the fly that I tie, I never fish it... As for the river brown trout, I mostly use nymphs, Mayflies and a very famous New England Marabou streamer pattern that you probably know- Black Ghost tied on Mustad L -87 3665A signature streamer hook (Limerick style bent) I do not like TMC 600 streamer hook as the surface of the wire is very slippy and it is not that easy to tie on, the wire is very flexible and that is why I do not like this one although my best stillwater rainbow was taken on the streamer using this hook... I am really glad that I can share with you and look forward to hearing from you, Best, Petr from Czech, Europe...

Oh I forgot to mention the following grayling drys that I succeded to fly fish with: White Moth in small sizes (it has silver tinsel ribbing), Coachman (fished it when it was cloudy and those white wings make it a killing fly, in bigger sizes also good for brown trout), Professor (in bigger sizes good for trout), Willow Fly, White Tag... Sure for trout also good are these: Hoffland´s Fancy, Wickham´s Fancy...

If you catch Pike in the grayling water it is realy good. Some grayling go out in the lake and grove big. And the pike feed on smal fish in shallow water. But for us the big fish come in and feed on caddis. Crazy but this is secret stuff to know. Super cool fly tv. / thanks
@danielbergman89805 жыл бұрын
flugfiskemys Yup! Top predators are often necessary if you’re looking for big specimens. That off course doesn’t mean it’s the best eco system, but it’s an eco system we fishermen appreciate. To bad not many of older generations understand this. Especially up north.
