In fly fishing, the primary function of the reel is for line storage. Reels designed for big fish and heavy lines do have a drag, and often a good one, but they have fairly slow retrieve speeds. That is why many, if not most, experienced fly anglers prefer to pull the line off the reel when they start fishing an area and never reel in again until they need to leave - choosing to pull the fish to the boat and apply drag pressure to the line with their hands.

What's the deal with not getting the small Pike to the boat, unhooked and released? You were effectively trying to live-bait with a small Jack Pike by leaving it in the water on purpose (8:00)

Great video but not a fan of dangling that small like in front of the big one until he gets attacked just to get the video. I realize pike get eaten in nature too and this is part of the food chain but in nature they have a chance to escape because they are not fixed on a hook. They let the small like dangle at least a minute in the water as a "live bait" just to get the cool pictures and in the end they release it with injuries. I'm a big Bauer fan and usually I try to not be holier than the pope and we all do stuff that stresses fishes as we fish but I think that crossed the line a little. If it is attacked in the drill fine but artificially prolonging the drill to provoke an attack imo is not ok.

Its interesting to hear the hosts talking about pike coexisting with trout and grayling. Here in alaska pike are considered invasive. If you take a pike out of the water here, it is illegal to put it back into the water unless you kill it. Crazy how different regulations are.
