This # 16 wet fly is loosely based upon Halford's original dry that is still used by a great deal of anglers today. Constructed from traditional materials, crow, wood pigeon & starling, with this on the end of your line, cast down and swung across stream, few wild fish will let it pass.

My first 3 wet flies 64 years ago were Black Gnat, light Cahill, and March Brown on a 3 fly rig. Had numerous doubles and 1 trible with that combo.

Thanks Barry, Wonderful fly. I will add this one to my fly box. Also, I am enjoying your new book, Flytying Techniques,very much. About to try wally wings for the first time. Always thought they were not worth tying as I would probably never actually fish something so delicate. But you have inspired me.

Love this fly. I caught my largest small mouth bass 5lbs 12 oz on this fly. Size 18 with 2lb tippit! This is ALWAYS in my fly box.size 16-22. Love how you tie this gnat. Another piece of practical art. Thanks for sharing your love and passion with us fly fishermen.

@@Thefeatherbender yes sir. I let him have all the line it wanted. The weight and resistance of the line wore it out. I kept the fish because it would have died in the summer water temperature. But I hope I don't have such a repeat in the future. Such fish should pass on those genes. I was after bluegills and rock bass.

When you say crow secondary you mean wing feather quilt or tail? Great looking pattern and looks very easy to tie as well thanks as always

I have one that is almost identical to this, difference is guinea fowl shoulder. Gives it that speckly look . Sweet tie though, I do it in a size #20 and it is very difficult to get right.

Ok , pretty much new to tying . Just got your book it's awesome (flytying techniques) . So are you using a crow feather pretty much like we do pheasant , got me confused .
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 11 ай бұрын
Hi Rod, Thanks pleased you like it, I'm working on volume II now. Yes crow, just make a finer segmented body than pheasant tail. As you progress and get more familiar with natural materials you will gain a greater understanding of what to use and when to use it. Good luck...

Hi Barry, Are there any alternatives to the crow secondary fibres? Stripped pheasant herl, maybe? Thanks again.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, you could use any large black secondary's, goose would work, or even black dyed pheasant tail.
@GeorgeSemel
@GeorgeSemel 4 жыл бұрын
@@Thefeatherbender I was thinking that a dyed black pheasant tail would be a good substitute. Not sure about wood Pidgeon, my guess mallard duck would work and the fish would not care a wit. I would also think that black superfine would work as well rib it will some copper wire or 5 or 6 x tippet. Shape size and color. Starling is easy to get and of course, Whiting provides all kinds of hackle for what every fly tying fantasy you may have.
