Fly Tying: A quick, easy, highly productive fly... the Marabou Laser Legal!

If you’re looking for an incredibly productive and easy fly to tie look no further! This fly Is incredibly versatile and it’s so easy to tweak colors to match any baitfish that swims. Also with a change in bead size or weight you can create a fly to fish at different levels in the water column. I’m sure it will work on any species but personally I’ve caught smallmouth, brown and rainbow trout including a beautiful brown trout I share during the intro. Also when you see the underwater footage (in the intro) you’ll see how it just comes alive! I can also assure you the profile makes it a dream to cast with any fly rod!

Tied this fly with black UV ice dub, jack gartsides secret stuff in peacock, black Marabou and some dark blue marabou at the head of the fly! It’s been great! Thanks again for the smaller streamer tutorials.. even the “mini” versions of KGs patterns are still pretty damn big for pa streams!

I love this pattern. Does it fit into a dropper fly category or more like a tandem pattern? It is common practice to whip finish or at least do half hitch to lock your pattern in. Why do you avoid doing that? On average, how long does your flies last?

This is one of my most productive and favorite patterns. You can fish it both independently or in tandem. When I fish it in tandem it's always the bottom fly, top fly is 90% of the time a microburst. GSP is incredibly slippery thread, I just got into the practice of super gluing or UV curing the head, never any issues. I've had flies last four or 5 years and catch hundreds of trout, small mouth, etc. Usually the flies end up on the bottom of the river, on a rock or a tree.

Would you ever use circle hooks in your patterns?

No, I've never had good luck with circle hooks. I have used barbless hooks with great success!

I do a similar fly but find it works better with rear hook cut off leaving just the shaft of the hook or I tie the rear section on a straight shaft that I make from stainless wire.

Question: I see you are using gorilla glue (CA) being completely new (this will be my first) to articulate streamer tying, I was under the illusion that gorilla glue is not water proof. I have always used resin or head cement for my flies. And are CA (super glues) really better than head cement? Sorry for the newbie question. Best Regards

I use any superglue I can find, Gorilla... currently using Zap A Gap. Never had an issue with the glue coming undone. Havent used head cement in 15+ years, always dried up to quick on me. However... if I had it I would use it. What you'll find with more experience is that most glues work it comes down to personal preference and patience. LOL... I have very little patience and that's why I love superglue so much, instant dry! :)

Overall I would say the majority are on the front but there are days when plenty of the fish are caught on the back!
