Fly Tying bench setup and organization. How I designed the setup of my fly tying station to keep me organized and help me stay efficient. Let us know in the comments if you have any tips that might help other fly tiers with their own fly tying benches.
Some of the equipment I use in my setup:
Wooden Thread Rack: amzn.to/2J5ikI7
Condiment Containers: amzn.to/2J0BEX4
Plastic hook & thread drawers: amzn.to/335G9He
Hackle pliers with box: amzn.to/3lYLrvA
Five light controller: amzn.to/2UODyfY
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

That's an amazing space you have there Matt. I'm fortunate to have a my own man cave. In fact we bought this house from a fly fishing guide. It's a very small room so it has to be super organized. The down is that there's feather fluff all over my guitars, amplifiers, Hi-fi, music collection, rod racks, guns, model trains, antique lures, books, and everything else that I'm not allowed to keep in other rooms!

Wow, you got it going on Matt. Your set up and all those materials took some time to accumulate. One of the most useful things I have is two little magnetic pads that came with some Umpqua hooks i bought. I use them while I am tying to lay hooks on one and beads on the other. That way I will not lose them on my bench. Enjoyed the tour of your tying room my friend.

Jason- that's a great tip with using those small magnets that come with the Umpqua hooks. I know exactly what you're talking about. Super nice & organized setup. I assume the organization came from your military experience. I imagine it’s quite difficult to tie while reaching around that reflector screen. Eek! That board of skins & feathers looks really impressive. Sweet! I will definitely copy your idea of using those little containers to hold completed dry flies. The next time we get Chinese food or other take-out, I’ll wash out the remaining mustard or duck sauce & save them as fly containers. Another container for you or your viewer to save - if you shop at Costco, Walmart or other store that sells large quantities, 1 gallon, large mouth pickle jars make great, pest proof storage containers for bird skins or furs. Not as pretty as your wall board or as stackable boxes but very useful. Another plus is that they are clear, so you can see what is inside, unlike the boxes.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 жыл бұрын
Bob- those jars are a great idea! Even Mason jars that you can buy in bulk, maybe a 1-quart size, would hold a good size piece of fur and would keep it air tight. I've never had any pests get into the furs or feathers that are exposed to the air on the cork board, but I do keep a close eye on them and if something ever did get into them, I would reconsider keeping them like that. Maybe in Ziploc bags, or the jars. I do like the idea of jars. As for the condiment containers... I'm too lazy to wash out the ones from restaurants, especially when I can get a hundred for eight bucks, and that first hundred I bought has lasted me five years so far. :-) Thanks for watching my friend, and for the tips for other tiers!

@@SavageFlies The would be interesting. I think you would have to rig up some sort of interior lighting to it. Maybe one of those flat LED strips for growing plants or something that just stick on. I think LED lights would be cool. You can get them to change color with a remote, depending on what type of flies you are highlighting. I also think you would need to reinforce the backing that would attach to the wall. A lot of those cheap craft store frames do not have backing that would hold much weight if affixed to a wall.

Thanks for the tour, Matt. Were you this organized before you started your channel? I'm fairly organized anyway but starting the channel caused me to kick that up a notch. Love your room. It looks really cozy. Mine also has the pandemic work from home situation going on. Are you a cat person on your own or by way of living with cat people? We are currently fostering, and have one cat at the moment.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 жыл бұрын
I go though spurts of getting organized-- maybe a couple times a year. Then I hoard enough until it drives me crazy to do it again! But yes, starting the channel has caused me to stay a bit neater. It's almost like a few times a week inviting people into my house. :-) As for being a cat person, I'm both a dog and cat guy. I brought the first two into my marriage, but we've gotten a couple more since (and one of the originals is still with us 14 years later). Everyone in the family loves animals. Our dogs, cats, rabbits and chickens. Of course the chickens aren't too cuddly but they do make good eggs. And I let a couple of our rabbits go unchecked this summer and we went from four to about 29 in a couple of months. (We're back down to seven, and they're outdoors in a couple of different runs.) Fun times!

Thanks Pablo! Yeah, that thread holder is the way to go. If I recall, you can get it cheaper at Walmart than Amazon. Maybe about ten bucks. I’m jealous, I can NEVER keep my area that clean and neat. In our whole hose my wife gave me a tiny section in our unfinished basement! That way anytime I’m tying she can call me back up stairs to do things for her. That’s her way of telling me I’m giving her enough attention. Cudo’s to you for your area.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 жыл бұрын
Ha! That's funny Gary. Before we lived in this house, we had no garage or basement and I got to tie either on the kitchen table or a desk in the corner of the living room! That kind of forces you to be neat. :-) Yeah, I'm pretty lucky now with a whole office space in the basement!

@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 жыл бұрын
Mark- I literally use this thing here. amzn.to/34IAZ85 I take the clamp off and hang it by its cord. I use a 5,700 Kelvin LED bulb. I forget how many lumens it is, maybe 1500 or so? But if you don't have a ceiling you could hang a light down from, you might want something like a swing-arm desk lamp. amzn.to/3I7iOra You can still put any bulb you want in it. Of course you can get dedicated fly tying lights but I've never found them to be any better than something like these. But they sure cost a lot more. I hope this helps!

Now I've got bench setup envy! ;o) I've always wanted to organize the way Lefty Kreh suggested in something I read along the way. But I became sort of a nomad tier. I always got evicted from choice locations, I'm not a successful squatter I guess. I have 1.5 rooms upstairs devoted to my outdoor pursuits but they got overrun with more acquisitions. Time to purge, thanks for the ideas Matt!

@@SavageFlies I am very lucky in the sense that I have a very small section of my reloading bench to turn into a fly tying station so I'm going to build a travel cabinet that I can use on fishing trips and tie out of that until I move to a better place and can have a larger space for material storage.
