A very useful fly for Lake Wendouree in the city of Ballarat, Australia. This is a renown Mayfly fishery upon which Loch-Style fly fishing is practiced. It has been a little out of competition favour but I continue to fish it successfully. As you say claret is a favoured colour on Wendouree itself and orange fishes well on other lakes. The variation I find to this is to use pearl mylar tinsel, leaving a short tail about 3-4mm in the mylar and then rib the body. This seems to be a focus point. I also have two ties. One is a thicker hackle to act more like a dry fly and the second has less turns which allows it to be pulled just below the surface. A nice long hang towards the end of a cast holding the carrot just below the surface induces many a take by hungry Brown Trout.

Thanks for the clear concise video ~ been desperate to get a few happening. One local guiding operation bought up all the Claret Carrots that landed in the last batch!! Before any of us punters got a look in... Better go warm up my vice!

Like the look Lindsay, it reminds me of the dung fly colours from years ago. Thanks and stay safe, big Davie.

I do recall that pattern, tight lines pal.

Ole guys like us remember when this pattern first appeared. I have three variations. 1/ big standard orange carrot. 2/ claret ie M&S or Waitrose posh carrot. 3/ sneaky carrot. Add a luminous rib blast it with a UV light before using. Worked for me towards dusk. A yes a carrot that actually helps you see in the dark. Lol also have some luck with holographic ribs or fluorescent ribs with other colours. Amber Black Olive Red Yellow

Hi Lindsay, as usual I’ll give you a lesson in geometry 90 is not 45 degrees as you suggest in tying in your hackle, honestly buddy you make me laugh, if you like I’ll edit your videos, seeing as I’m such a perfectionist lol. Loved the video by the way. Many year’s ago I slaughtered the brownies with this fly on Lintrathen reservoir in Angus fished on a sinking line and most of the fish took on the hang. Regards Jimf

I prefer the claret carrot. Good fly here. Although it should be called the beetroot.

Derek, Claret is also John Horsey's preferred colour for the fly.
