Great video! I did laugh a bit at the 'If you turn over rocks you see a lot of dull brown insects, so I'm going to tie a nymph with bright flashy green and an orange unlike anything you would ever see under a rock.'

😂😂😂 Seriously!! It is rather ironic.. lol I start with the nymph colors and tones and tie a bunch that way and then I spice it up a bit and add hot spots and flash that get them noticed. The ones with flash catch some serious fish though! I say make em both ways and see what works for you!

Yeah... I hated the nail polish method and waiting for it to dry and then when it dried it would sink into the slot and never look right. UV Resin is way better!

YES I DID! Good eye! I don't think I got the one you linked but I got a similar one. It's been very eye opening as to the difference in weights in my flies. My sexi bomb is so much heavier than my other flies 😂 This fly is the lightest fly I tie.

I decided to not give up on them as they have such an amazing collection of color or material (translucent, UV...). Hope all is well. Looking FWD to part 2 video of "fly selection". I always thought these little, smooth looking Perdigons wouldn't be so catchy. Since this weekend I know they are. Saterday (23 July '22) here in the Čech Republic, in the shop of Jan Šiman, I met Joao Abreu from Portugal. Joao is owner and managing director of Perdigomania. Like the name of the company makes you suspect they make Perdigons. That Saturdayafternoon we went fishing together and to try and convince myself he gave me a couple of his Perdigons. Just an hour later I was more than convinced these things are just crazy. I used them as the pointer under a floating dropper. To make it short, within an hour I had a couple of takes and caught some rainbows and brown trout. Thank you Joao, thank you Perdigons. Sure I'm going to tie a lot of these things. Love your work! I'm in Australia and only new to the Euro nymphing game, but what I've found over here, is that using a UV-enhanced wing-case colour resin (I use Motor Oil - Gulff), makes a big difference in the number of fish that strike the fly. I guess that the when the fly is deeper, the UV enhancement in the resin makes it more visible. A bit like fishing in deep saltwater with soft plastics like Z-man Motor Oil jerk shads.

That's a good idea Jim! I don't utilize the dry dropper enough! When I've tried it I've had a hard time getting the dry to stay up under the weight of the nymph. It's an area I want to play with more and figure out what I like! Typical stimulators just don't do it for me...not enough float. I think something with significant foam would be important.

I use a bodkin or a needle to place the bead on the hook. I orient the hook in the vise clamped near the eye, hook point up. I slip the bead on the bodkin slot first, pick up the bead in my fingers, align the shaft of the bodkin with the hook point and slide the bead onto the hook.

I 100% make my own leaders. I have a volume in my Euro Nymphing Series on my leader/micro leader formulas which is here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYSVhKlojpKigZo However, I just recorded a new video where I altered my formula by extending the main line of the leader by about 20 more feet and then use a micro loop connection to connect it to the fly line. Keep an eye out for that one in the coming months.

Thanks! I would tie them as droppers for the most part in smaller sizes. Probably size 16 (which is what I did in the video), 18 and 20. I think I did a 2.8mm on this size 16. I might stay with that size or drop down a bit smaller for a size 18 and even smaller for the 20. Maybe down to 2.0 or 2.2mm?

what about the crystal flash comes in a bag with a zip tie? seems to take alot of wraps to make a body with it..Should I not be using that for perdigon bodies?

I personally wouldn't use crystal flash as a perdigon body. It is very thin as you noted but also a round material which is not ideal. I like the Hends Perdigon Bodies or similar. They're flat so they build an even body and just wide enough to cover the body of the fly effectively.

I have wondered that before... but I do think the body of the fly is what they're after. I've heard the bead can simulate an air bubble on the fly.

I would probably not try this for steelhead unless else is working. I'm sticking to egg patterns, buggers or stoneflies probably. However, if fishing was really tough I might try some regular nymphs if they've been in the river a while.

How important is it to use CDL for the tail? Has it been compared to other tailing materials for sink rate and fish approval?

I like it for a Perdigon but I've heard of other people using wood duck fibers or dry fly hackle fibers. If you don't have CDL you can definitely find substitutes.

If you're just starting out I would start with a fly tying kit such as this one. amzn.to/3OZg2Zh Just start with basic tools. You don't need to drop hundreds of dollars on tools to get started. The basic tools you'll use are a vise, bobbin to hold your thread, whip finisher, hackle pliers, scissors, a bodkin and a threader. The kit linked has all of that. I still use some of the very first tools I ever got for a kit like this. Other things like the vise and scissors you'll want to upgrade as you gain experience. I personally use the Renzetti Traveler Vise and love it... amzn.to/2VuLOB2 Good luck!

I also changed my connection of fly line to leader to a micro loop which is going to make a big difference when it does go through the guides. I should have that video out in the coming months.

One thing I don't understand: This fly is meant to be fished so that the hook is up,Correct. OK but why then is the wing case on the bottom of the fly? Please advise RVV

Devin Olsen actually wrote an article about this specifically and I've seen him address this exact question on his KZbin channel. Yes... they ride point up so the wing case would be on the bottom of the fly. A natural fly in the water will tumble around in the currents so a wing case on the bottom will not matter to the trout. It is rare that you actually see someone tie a fly on a jig hook so that it drifts exactly the right way. I do it this way because you see the gap in the slotted bead there anyway and the wing case covers it. To be honest... I doubt the fish see or care about it at all.

Enjoyed this video as well as all your videos. In the future I would like to see a video on reading water. Specifically, I would like to know if some water types would be best to just bypass for Euro nymphing because they would be a waste of time. One stretch of my local stream can be on fire for dry fly fishing, but I have Euro nymphid that area a number of times, when there was not a hatch coming off the water, with no sucess. Move down the road a couple of miles and I have no problem contacting fish with the same nymphs that drew no response at the first location. That one rather large area of a couple hundred yards is loaded with fish but very little to no action with Euro nymphing, why is that?

I did one on how to read water in the winter which is in my Euro Nymphing Series already. I recorded another a few weeks ago that I have to edit that ended up highlighting the differences of finding fish on warm sunny days versus the lower light hours. I was planning on shooting how to read water on pocket water last weekend but I ended up getting sick and had to cancel that trip. I also have a video planned on "When NOT to Euro Nymph" because not every water is good for it. I think certain water absolutely fits euro nymphing and other water does not. And outside of the stretch of water... some conditions may favor euro nymphing and other conditions may not. In general I'm looking for moving water (riffle or run) that has sections where the water slows down (either underneath the fast water or next to the fast water creating seams). Typically the best euro water for me is 2 feet deep to maybe 5 or 6 feet deep. Any deeper than that and it gets tricky to maintain feel. Anyway... I will be release several videos over the next few months that I think will help!

The stretch of river that leaves me scratching my head is virtually featureless with no well defined seams and almost no surface disturbance, yet it has a reasonable amount of current that forces me to mend my dry fly cast almost every time. The stream is wide, half of which is 1-2 feet of depth and on the better side the depth is 3-4 feet with most of the foam line on the deeper side. If the theory that 90% of the time trout feed subsurface I don't know what these fish are feeding on. After just two months of Euro nymphing under my belt along with two years of watching every KZbin video on Euro that I come across, my best guess is that the slowness of the current simply gives to much time for the fish to inspect my offering, what do you think? I am currently using 5x fluorocarbon for my tippet, do you think 6 or 7x would make a difference?

Based on what you said I'm wondering if the fish are seeing you? The "No surface disturbance" is a tough situation for euro nymphing because you have to get fairly close to fish effectively and in that kind of situation you might be seen by the fish. Calmer water creates spookier fish for sure! Ever try a dry dropper there? Cast from further away and suspend a nymph under the dry? Might be good for that type of water. I have a spot like that on one of my local rivers and sometimes those fish key in on tiny insects and are really tough to catch. I'll drop to long, light leaders (dry fly fishing) to get them. Wouldn't hurt to drop to 6X on the tippet to the fly. But try the dry dropper and see how it goes.

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Great ideas. i never considered I might be seen by the fish. I always dress drab colors, no white caps here and both shorelines are lined with trees, I thought I was close to invisible. Complicate the flat water surface with my inexperienced Euro casting skills and the possibility of fish seeing me or me not being capable of reaching fish that don't see me makes for a strong explanation for what may be going on. About two weeks ago I was fishing that spot and the dry fly bite was on but although I was getting a lot of strikes, I had very few hook ups, about 80% of my takes resulted in no fish. My friend who is a big advocate of dry-dropper rigs said I should have tried that. My plan was to try that the next time I fished but the next time I went, casting the same flies as I had 3 days earlier, almost every take resulted in a fish. Because of that I never did try running a nymph under my dry fly but I will the next time I'm there just to see if I can attract some fish on a nymph. I think all this is pointing towards what you said earlier in your first response, some water is not suited for Euro nymphing. Thanks for the help, looking forward to your next video. I'll let you know if I have any success.

Definitely let me know how it goes! I've had days like you describe where they take the dry fly but they are not really eating it and you can't hook em! I find that only happens in slow pools where they can toy with you like that. In faster water they have to eat or not eat... there isn't time to mess around 😂 I like faster water sooooo much better than slow water! 🙂
