Nice video on herl. I think herl is one of the best materials we have for fly tying .so many productive patterns incorporate this awesome material. 👍

Glad you like the video. Peacock herl has a very interesting quality to it; great colors and it seems to come alive in the water. - Ian Anderson

Great job on this video. My wife had a bunch she purchased at a thrift store and I grabbed a few. They work great every time. I even blanched and died a few eyes for nymphs. Amazing stuff?!!

Glad you found some useful information. I mentioned in the description that I am planning a 'Part II' video on processing a batch of tail feathers. Should be out sometime mid-January. - Ian Anderson

Thanks for this info. I used to think the craft store ones were no good. Now I know differently.

You are welcome Ruth. Some of the stuff in the craft stores aren't all that great. Some strung in the packages are pretty good. Being natural materials you have to look them over to make certain they are what you want. 👍 - Ian Anderson

Good info. I quit buying strung herl and just order the eyes. I’ve to a few vase’s on my desk, one for pheasant centers, one for peacock eyes and the others for assorted random feathers. Much easier to select, at least in my application

Glad you found the video useful. Some packages of strung herl are pretty good but you have to hunt for them. I find processing the full tail feather just makes for better materials and you always know where they are and that they will be the quality you are looking for. - Ian Anderson

Very true, I tie for fun and relaxation so being able to choose the correct herl makes it so much better not to mention that they are so cheap considering how many flies you can tie from a single eye feather.
