This video has more detailed information concerning processing and working with Peacock Herl than what is normally included in some of the fly tying videos. Peacock herl is a very popular fly tying material and is used in many different patterns as well as styles of flies. I recently did a fly tying video on the Barrington ( • Tying the Barrington -... ) and talked about using peacock herl and I have another coming out in a week on the Grackle which also used peacock herl but in a different way. Hopefully this video will answer a few questions many tiers have about using this very versatile material and will help you enjoy your time at the vise a little more. - Enjoy
Additional note: in the process of doing this video I decided to do a Part II
Peacock herl video. I have a bunch (about 40ish) Peacock tail feathers that
need processing. While editing this footage I came up with a couple of ideas
to process these tail feathers a little more efficiently. That is what the
Part II video will focus on. I should be getting that out after the 1st of 2023.

Great job on this video. My wife had a bunch she purchased at a thrift store and I grabbed a few. They work great every time. I even blanched and died a few eyes for nymphs. Amazing stuff?!!

Thanks for this info. I used to think the craft store ones were no good. Now I know differently.

You are welcome Ruth. Some of the stuff in the craft stores aren't all that great. Some strung in the packages are pretty good. Being natural materials you have to look them over to make certain they are what you want. 👍 - Ian Anderson

Good info. I quit buying strung herl and just order the eyes. I’ve to a few vase’s on my desk, one for pheasant centers, one for peacock eyes and the others for assorted random feathers. Much easier to select, at least in my application

Glad you found the video useful. Some packages of strung herl are pretty good but you have to hunt for them. I find processing the full tail feather just makes for better materials and you always know where they are and that they will be the quality you are looking for. - Ian Anderson

Very true, I tie for fun and relaxation so being able to choose the correct herl makes it so much better not to mention that they are so cheap considering how many flies you can tie from a single eye feather.
