A second post with a question. I noted that you use an FNF vice. I, like many, missed the window to get a LAW vice. The two best options I see now are HMH and FNF, unless you know of another (excepting the ludicrous prices on EBAY for a LAW 🙄). Have you seen and/or used the HMH? Do you have an opinion regarding the differences in functionality and manufacturing quality between them, if any? I’ve only seen the two on the respective websites and on KZbin, but the fit and finish of the HMH seem lacking. The difference in design of the ‘spinner’ is less of a concern to me. I would learn to use either. Thank you. If the question puts you on ‘the spot’ just ignore it.
@DressedIrons3 ай бұрын
I too wish I had picked up a Laws vise back in the '90s. I like the FNF vise and have enjoyed tying on it. I do not have any experience with the HMH vise. For whatever reason, I have never been drawn to HMH vises. I think it is a personal preference thing as for years they did not have any "true rotary" vise and paying a couple hundred dollars for a "stationary" vise does not appeal to me. That said, I have not tied on any HMH vises and I know a number of tiers who do and love them. Maybe I am missing somethings? The only criticism of the FNF Talon vise I would have is that it takes a number of turns of the "spinner" to really clamp down on the hook to where it does not move in the vise. This too could be a function of my personal tying habits at the vise versus an inherent issue with the vise. If you are looking for a good vise (one that you will be tying on for many years) and have the money I can easily recommend the FNF Talon vise. Keep in mind though, if you tie many different types and sizes of flies you will end up with a number of vises. One or two will be your main work horse but some will be just for certain flies or sizes. - Ian Anderson

Great set of lessons inspired by a beautiful fly. Not only do I learn best from my mistakes, they offer the most teachable moments. I think it was Patton that I am misquoting who said he judged a person not by how well they did everything, rather by how they made mistakes and then corrected them.

Thank you for the compliment and feedback. I have enjoyed the Remnant fly series as it allows for being creative at the vise. They don't always turn out the same as I see in my mind but then that leads to "correcting" them to make then better. - Ian Anderson

Many of Carrie Stevens streamers have a single band of color in the head, usually red or orange. It is sort of her signature and a bit of a debate. That said, often tiers will tie her patterns which call for a band of color in a solid color; all black or all red. Glad you like the videos! - Ian Anderson

Can I add a thinner to my head cement? It seems super thick compared to yours and others I've seen. Same dispenser bottle, probably same product. I've got some lacquer thinner - I've thought about putting that in there! Any thoughts? Advice? Thanks!!
@DressedIrons4 ай бұрын
Yes, you can. You will need to find the correct thinner for your particular cement. The cement I use is called Fly-Tite and it is an alcohol based cement. It is pretty thin straight out of the bottle but easy to thin if using the applicator bottle that I use. - Ian Anderson

The mixing of the dubbing by hand is more traditional and give each fly a unique character and not a mass-produced look. I prefer to stay with the old ways as much as possible. Being as I am not a production tier, that is not a problem.
@DressedIrons5 ай бұрын
It is an interesting thought that so often we want each fly we fish to look just like the last one (that we were catching fish on!) but in nature the insects and baitfish that the fish eat do not look exactly alike each other. An argument could be made that the flies "unique character" might more closely mimic food sources. Thanks for the feedback and comment! - Ian Anderson

That is the very reason I watch fly tying videos of tying realistic patterns and tying of salmon/steelhead patterns. They are beautiful, very detailed, and I always pick up something useful although I most likely will never tie them. What I fish for does not require such perfection, just something with a buggy look or fishy look.
@DressedIrons5 ай бұрын
Many flies that are tied these days (especially those tie for the Internet, yes including mine 😁 ) tend to lean towards that "perfectionistic" side. Almost as those fly tying were a pursuit in and of itself. Part of it comes from tying (literally) thousands of flies. Your skills get better and better over time. Fortunately, fish are not so fussy, which is something I always stressed when teaching any tying classes. If the fish are refusing your fly it is not because it not Instagram ready. - Ian Anderson

Working flies and formal flies. Working flies are what I tie for fishing. I do not tie formal flies but am thinking about it. The salmon and steelhead flies are absolutely beautiful, and I love watching a professional fly tier, such as yourself, tie them on KZbin.
