Barry I have probably commented before, but I wanted to update you and your awesome Subscribers, incase there are those who have still not tried this pattern. I have been tying for a very long time and I am embarrassed to say there are still a few patterns I don't like to tie, this being amongst one of them, I used to swallow my pride and buy them! 😱😱 So, last night, after watching this video for the sixth time, I started tying these on a #16 and I am totally sold on this method! I am a bit slow but I don't tie commercially anymore so as long as I get 18 of every pattern I want I am good. It was such a good feeling to finally beat this pattern, I kept thinking, "Thank you Barry, Thank you Barry!" So did I mention his book? Fly Tying Techniques? I paid $34.95 Canadian for a book worth at least twice that. Barry, tying on the wing seperately was a stroke of genius sir!

I know it is a pain to get the pattern tied as it originally was, but now that I have learned the proportions, and as long as I have long enough deer hair, it is easier to do it the old way for me. If I had not been completely frustrated until I learned to tie them, and was determined to learn to proportion the fly correctly, this method would have saved me from all that but it was too late. Another excellent video, when I started tying the Humpy it was called a Goofus Bug, thankfully that name fell by the wayside and we stick with Humpy. I also learned to tie it with the "hump" being constructed by tying in long enough hair to make the hump and the wings with one long bunch. I like your method, and the next time I tie Goofus Bugs I will try yours.

Hi John, thanks. Yeah I remember the Goofus bug! I also began tying it with hump wings and I remember how difficult it was the first time I tried to tie it that way, I think I must have struggled for days to get the proportions right... This is a method I devised, maybe a little out of frustration, but mostly for practicality, as it is a great fishing fly!

I fish the hump more than any other fly and have tied hundreds of them in different sizes and colors and this is the most convoluted tie of the fly that I have ever seen. There are far simpler and effective ways of putting this fly together

@@Thefeatherbender I now use masking tape to hold the tail down b4 I add the deer hair body and the split the ears and tape them b4 I do the hackle. This keeps the hair in place and under control 😌 a bit like mousse for us

This fly in red is my favorite with lighter deer fur for the top fly with a red copper john barr emerger dropper in autumn for brown trout...its about 50/50 as to which fly gets the take... Red seems to be a favorite color for our brown trout in Colorado.. I put a bit of uv behind the wings before the hackle goes on for durability... Thanks for sharing your technique

Hi Aaron, comparadun is a style of fly not a material but some companies market some deer hair as comparadun hair. This hair is normally a little short for what you need hear.

I use a heavier thread for tying the deer hair on, once it's split into the wings I whip and cement it, then restart with the regular finer thread, goes faster and allows for a tighter pull.

Hi Brian, yeah thats a good method, I tend to use only Dyneema 55 for all my deer hair work. It's 14/0 and you can pull a car with it.

@@Thefeatherbender The only Dyneema thread you can find here is for sails and it's in the 4mm thick so it's a bit heavier than I need, been trying to find a source online but, no luck so far. Bad thing about Florida is all the tying stuff is for huge saaltwater fly's.

Brian, you can also use GSP thread thats available just about everywhere now! Dyneema is a GSP.

I agree it is easier, it doesn't look like a traditional humpy but probably fishes the same. I love your tying, and particularly your vise. I have the same one. I was disappointed the lower clamp top came off the vise and I have never found it. It still tightens up into wood but it has to dig in the wood. I have tried several times to explain to Petitjean's website what is broken. No luck. Could be a language issue as I am sure Marc doesn't answer those inquiries. All the best to you. Sean

And a small piece of advice for inexperienced tiers who want to learn but have a limited materials supply, can use embroidery thread as a floss substitute, about a third the cost at most, and comes in enough quantity to tie a jillion fly's.

@@Thefeatherbender I still use it for some ties, some of the shinier one's when coated with uv res, get that sweet deep translucency that I haven't found in any of the regular flosses. Have also found some cut into short lengths make great dubbing when combed a bit.

Hi Barry. Could you let me know what you regard as the best cape/saddle to suit larger dries, in size 10. I'm finding it very hard to get a cape/saddle with enough hackles to suit a size 10 and with enough stiffness in the fibre. I recently bought a few Euro Saddles and had the above problem, more like a Grade 2 Metz saddle in fibre softness than an outfight dry fly hackle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Slick, It's always a problem if you are tying larger dry's in the 8 and 10 size range to find appropriate hackle of a decent quality. I have found the that the American whole saddle from Whiting to offer the best range of larger stiff dry fly hackle, failing that Whiting bronze capes and Whiting pro grade, but you have to forget buying on the net you should really examine them first hand to make the best purchase.

The feather bender thanks for the info. I've recently moved from Ireland to Canada and finding it quiet hard to obtain decent materials pertinent to the flies I need for customers back home, as most online shops over here tailor to tiers fishing streamers, Salmon patterns etc. The reason I want the large, stiff hackles is for big Mayflies for lough fishing. The technique back home is the cast to a rising fish from a drifting boat and then drag the dry fly back in short bursts which nearly always provokes a positive response. Seldom does a static fly work. The trouble with this is, on the big loughs there's always a medium to large wave rolling hence the need for the stiffer hackle to aid with keeping the fly 'up' on the retrieve. Perhaps you'd be good enough, next time your replenishing your stocks, to let me know where/which supplier has what I need and I can then order from there. That would be greatly appreciated.

I must say it’s very interesting to compare ur humpy with other great Great Fly Tiers, ur's seems to expose much more of the under body and minimize the Elk/Deer/Moose hair. Hi Dave, thanks. Well we all have different styles. When I tie a pattern that many tyers find "difficult" I look at the technique and materials and try to make it quicker and easier to tie without compromising the original design too much.

Hi Alessio, traditionally you use two hackles, one brown and one grizzle. You can also use a Cree hackle that is a mixture of both and is also known as install Adams.

Fiddly but a great fly. Don't know what it represents but the fish love them. I believe it was originally tied to represent a fly called a goofus bug. We don't have them in the UK but nobody seems to have told the fish. I like your method its a bit easier than the original and it looks better.

Hi Bob, thanks. The goofus bug is really same fly, different name, but they are both "may flies" but also great attractor patterns, that would say that, to the trout they look like food..

Any of Barry's videos! Every one of them have thumbs down. Why? Because there are people who run around Facebook hitting the thumbs down for no good reason. Small minded bored people. Would be nice if they actually explained their rationale.
