I first learned the Usual from Eric Leiser at the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum in Roscoe N.Y. That was over 20 years ago and it has been in my fly box ever since. Not the same one of coarse, but many like it.

a great classic, nicely done. The ones I tied I never split the wing like that, good idea. Mike

Thanks Jim. I love this pattern. Just learned it about a month ago and I'm here for a refresher course. I'm curious if you've fished this fly on the Upper Delaware River. Any suggestions on color variations?
@TheFlymanJim10 жыл бұрын
I have used this on the Upper Delaware, that is what it was designed for. That and the other streams in the Catskill Region. I have also tied this using Olive thread, which works well too. The bleed through of the thread is what makes it so good.

Jim, love this pattern! But that fur is not easy to dub,,, any advice? Also, I never really split the wings, is that necessary?
@TheFlymanJim3 жыл бұрын
No but it helps. You can also use it during a spinner fall with Spilt wings. And you can see it for a while after your rusty spinner disappears.

Hi Jim- I was under the impression this was a sulphur imitation. You said it also works as a Hendrikson. What is your favorite sulphur pattern?
@TheFlymanJim3 жыл бұрын
This will work on a sulpher hatch if you use a yellow or orange thread. The idea behind this fly using red thread when the body gets wet it shows the thread color through the rabbit fur. Red making it appear pink like the female Hendrickson. Yelllow or Orange will make it a sulpher. My favorite if I have one is a cripple emerger or a loop wing, also the sulpher flymph is great for the sulpher hatch. All give the impression of n emerging mayfly.

Jim where do you purchase your snowshoe rabbit foot hair from?
@TheFlymanJim8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Barrey I got mine from a friend who hunts. They are the best ones to get for the color and waterproof qualties.

Jim do you treat those with a flotant or are they buoyant enough ?
@TheFlymanJim6 жыл бұрын
You can use floatant but if you use true snowshoe foot it is naturally buoyant. Most that you buy commercially is not true snowshoe foot. But unless you hunt them you only get domestic feet which I would use floatant on.
