I feel the United Kingdom have the best terrestrial and Special Forces in the word. This opinion is based my experience of 20 years in the RAF and having mingled with other military members from around the world. I live in America now and I also feel British people are generally more informed and better educated. We may not be able to effect 'full spectrum dominance' or have an annual $650 billion budget to equip us, and we may also be a nation in decline, but we do have some very well trained, very effecient and highly motivated people in the British military and we should all be very proud of the British Armed Forces, especially UKSF, who, if they are not the best (because I simply don't know) are the blue print for all SF that came after them. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇸

The problem with sending modern equipment back in time is that modern equipment couldn't possibly be maintained back then. @normalwisdom82009 жыл бұрын
+minitrundle Well spotted except ... the QRA pilots aren't Squadron Leaders and since there are more pilots than planes there is no correlation between the names on the planes and the people that are flying them.
@FallenPhoenix869 жыл бұрын
+Normal Wisdom Its still rather odd, I've never seen RAF aircrew withhold their names on any documentary or news piece. The fact that they are sitting QRA dosn't matter, the RAF has been standing QRA uninterrupted for the last 60 years - its akin to having a police officer being on the beat, its what they do.
@Jamieb1939 жыл бұрын
+Normal Wisdom obviously it's dull. Sitting around waiting for an alarm is going to be dull. This guy is playing it off like they don't have an important job though by comparing them to a desk sergeant who is on call
@normalwisdom82009 жыл бұрын
FallenPhoenix86 Jamie Ball I don't think FallenPhoenix86 is saying that the job of fast jet pilot isn't challenging (at least I hope he isn't) just that QRA is usually one of the least challenging parts because it normally involves sitting around (or trying to sleep) waiting for something that probably won't happen. There is a lot of being a fast jet pilot that is considerably more difficult than that.
@FallenPhoenix869 жыл бұрын
Normal Wisdom I get the logic to a degree, and have seen it elsewhere; for example active duty Israeli pilots won't generally appear on film without their faces being blurred. I've just never seen a case of RAF personnel doing this.

I must admit, as much love as I have for our F-22 Raptor, there's 2 jets I love more. I spent 11 yrs in the US army (two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan), my older brother is a F-15E pilot and has flown and trained with a lot of British pilots. There are a ton of British pilots that come to the US and train with US pilots. But one thing my brother told me was that the British pilots he talked to were very excited about the F-35's they were flying and getting. While the Tyhoon is a very good multi role fighter, it's radar isn't the best and lets it down in some regards. So going from the Tyhoon to the F-35 is a huge jump in capabilities.

The F35 will replace the Tornado in the RAF. It will complement rather than replace the Typhoon in the RAF in the same way it does the F22 in the USAF

Maybe, but we HAVE Typhoons. How long before we see any F35s?

The professional way in which our RAF protect the Uk is why we have not been attacked from the air since WW2. Sure, it’s cost us billions and will continue to do so. I just wish recent (and the present) governments would have increased funding instead of this attitude of barely covering it with very sly financial shavings. Respect to all of these guys. Great article
