The Neolithic burial chambers of Tinkinswood and St Lythans near Cardiff. A journey back in time, over 6000 years to the mysterious days of early Wales.
Originally both of the burials would have been covered with earth.
The burial chambers of Tinkinswood and St Lythans can be found in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales just over 7 miles from Cardiff City Centre.
Both burial sites are free to visit although parking is limited, they are run by CADW which is the Welsh Government's historic environment service.
6000 yeas ago Tinkinswood was the site of a Neolithic village but the burial chamber is all that remains. Just a mile south of #Tinkinswood is St Lythans burial chamber which lies in the middle of a field that is meant to be haunted.

Really cool that this area is unspoilt so many places become tourist traps.

Yes, you really get the atmosphere of the place as it rarely gets busy and neither has been swallowed up by development over the years.

The scenery reminds me so much of Scotland! So beautiful. We haven't made our way to Wales but I know for sure we will love it when we do. I am a big fan of historical sites and Celtic history, so we would be for a treat there.

We slept in the chamber at Tinkinswood once on a magic mushroom night...it was a scary, ancient & amazing night... the wood nearby felt unwelcoming as if the trees didn't want us there & were shifting about! Was probably the mushrooms though lol We stayed alive & were already a bit mad lol...Awesome place!

was interested to hear that the stones move and bathe, the carreg bica on Drummau in Skewen is supposed to do that on Easter morning. Our village used to have a race up the mountain on Easter morning to try and catch the stone in the act of bathing in Neath river. These days they just light up a big cross on the mountain, frightens me every year as from my house it often looks like a ufo :)

Yes Wales and its historical sites are very mysterious, most of the celtic druids lived here because they thought Wales was magical.

If this chamber took 200 people to lift the rocks and build it, how many people were involved in setting up Stonehenge? That's a big mystery. The historical info is very rich.

The stones for this chamber were quarried locally, but what is amazing that about Stonehenge is that some of the stones were quarried hundreds of miles away.

So would that be the quarry just up the hill in St Lytham's in it's early days ?

it's well worth the visit. If you're a NT member, then park at Dyffryn House & Gardens and make this trip part of a Vale of Glam. hike/walk/ramble?

You can't really say that bank commercials are written by poets right... But yeah no idea what would be worse. Interesting to see those burial chambers. We have something similar in the Netherlands.
@flydriveexplore
@flydriveexplore 3 жыл бұрын
The Netherlands probably had a very similar ancient culture. There was still a land crossing to mainland Europe until about 6000 BC and even after it separated it was still a very short distance.

I can feel the creepiness and the historical. Love the historical information. Very interesting to know that Tinkinswood is older than the stonehedge. It would be great if I turn into a poet as I am very poor in literature :D I wonder how true the legend is for St. Lythans. Glad that the stones are still there and good thing no quakes or storms destroyed them. does it get busy on the weekends?
@flydriveexplore

It is amazing how they are still there. It's never busy there, they are just situated in a field with free access.
