Once on Allegiant we had to fly back to the airport due to a problem. But I've had that happen with the big name airlines too. The only problem with Allegiant is the small number of flights. Once I missed my flight in Las Vegas because it was Sunday and the security line took 2 hours to get through. That was the only Allegiant flight until Thursday. Staying in Vegas till Thursday could have been fun, but I needed to get home and had to pay twice as much for my one way ticket on United as I had paid for my round trip ticket on Allegiant. I flew Allegiant last month from Vegas to Colorado Springs. Our flight got delayed for 20 minutes due to "mechanical problems." I joked to my wife that they probably forgot to put gas in it. With planes being serviced in Mexico and El Salvador, I think we can get used to more "mechanical issues" or even engine failures such as the Southwest one.

Example, at least 11 of the aborted in LV were because of unusually high airport temperatures. Some were other causes like unlocked baggage doors, hydraulic low limits & other common problems with ALL AIRLINES. 60 min made it sound like they were all due to engines blowing up. If you have facts, please share. No I don't work for Allegiant nor does anyone I know. I just know 60 minutes ALWAYS has an agenda.

Pay is great, pilots are great, maintenance is great... all airlines have maintenance issues pop up with every airplane and it is so frustrating to see such a remarkably biased story (as if no other airline has to deal with day to day maintenance issues). I’m hoping to go fly for them too when our kids are older. Also does the public really believe pilots don’t want to make it home to their families? I hope Allegaint sues CBS. People don't realize how this all really does make sense. Allegiant Air's CEO is the same CEO from the BUDGET airline Valujet from the 1990's. This information is like a repeat of that airline. Valujet's planes were very old and had many safety issues. What did them in was flight 592 that crashed into the Florida Everglades killing all 110 people on board due to negligence. With all the negative publicity and having severe financial issues, they merged and changed their name to Airtran airways. AirTran is gone too but now Maurice is the CEO of Allegiant and now all the same problems are emerging again. Putting money before safety with unsafe maintenance issues and using very old planes that were cheap to buy. Someone in the airline industry did their research and traced this airline all the way from Valulet. You couldn't pay me to step foot on this airline. There would be a large risk of losing my life.

Since the date you made this post, Allegiant has had more and more emergency landings, at a higher rate than any other airline in the country. Their oldest plane right now, is 24 years old, and guess what? This same plane had smoke in the cockpit issues in 2018! An Allegiant Airbus A320-200, registration N225NV performing flight G4-101 from Cedar Rapids,IA to Phoenix Mesa,AZ (USA) with 157 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Cedar Rapid's runway 09 when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit, stopped the climb at about 5000 feet and returned to Cedar Rapids for a safe landing on runway 09 about 18 minutes after departure. The airline reported the smoke was caused by a mechanical issue

02Nawal -You don't know what you are talking about! The age of planes has nothing to do with nothing. There are planes flying today, on a daily basis, over 60 years old and some nearly 80 years old. The FAA would not permit them to fly if they were not serviceable. Under no circumstances would the FAA give a pass to any aircraft or air carrier operation to continue under hazardous conditions. They are very strict about the maintenance of aircraft and airmen records. They even regulate military aircraft. Get the facts straight before you run your mouth...and learn to spell correctly.
@codeyfoster11056 жыл бұрын
Charles Bishop same to you. It’s her opinion.
@shonaharris93286 жыл бұрын
02Nawal- Exactly. The average airplane is 12 years old. Allegiant is from 22-25. The older they are, the more requirements to update, perform maintenance checks, and repairs. And despite all of this, Allegiant didn't follow through. Cheap, cheap, cheap! Compromising customer's safety. They have the worst record of mechanical issues and because of this they have canceled flights and often without notification. They had the worst customer service I've ever experienced and I have flown on many. American, United, and Horizon/Alaska Airlines. Scores of big complaints of cancelled, delays, poor customer service, and scary reports from faulty breaks. I'm surprised it has taken this long for a report. There's been a file planned for the FAA. There's been some whistle-blowing by mechanics and others but not enough has occurred from it. The treatment of my mother was abhorrent. She needed wheelchair assistance and said they would fetch her one. We had notified the airline way ahead and let them know when we got there. We nearly missed our flight. Not to mention when we were on the flight, it just became worse from there. They were very rude and some things were uncalled for.

To be honest, I have experienced issues with American Airlines (may it's because of the increased number of times that I have flown with them). Every time I land back in Florida from an AA flight, I feel like I have a puffy head for a few days. I wonder if AA treats the cabin with heavy disinfectant. I don't have that feeling when I arrive in FL from an Allegiant flight. I feel safe on Allegiant. My wife were held over last Sept. for about 18 hr. due to an AA engine problem. Is this the entire episode? What a joke! Just FYI people ... ALL airlines have incidences of the these types mentioned in this video. As a former flight attendant for a major airline, I personally have had or know crew members who have experienced one or more of these incidences. Yes, an airline can be corrupt or guilty of cutting corners, BUT I don’t think this episode proves that. I actually feel sorry for Allegiant because this type of media can destroy a company. This appears to be a deliberate intend to attack this airline without any real proof. I flew Allegiant in September of 2016. A woman told us they closed down the ticket gate early and told 11 of us to go through security with our luggage and they would let us board the plane. We got through and made it to the terminal just for the same woman to be standing there telling us they wouldn’t let us board the plane because the doors were already closed. The plane was then 20 minutes late for take off. The group of people were obviously upset. The same woman called the police on all of us who said themselves that Allegiant does this all the time. She told us to go back to the ticket counter where we could get vouchers for other flights. When we got back to the counter the same woman was there stating that they couldn’t do anything for us after she told us she could at the terminal. It was ridiculous.

When speed breaks and spoilers were deployed, I took a look and saw no evidence of hydraulic leaks (that’s where hydraulics run for flight controls) tiers looked fine, and that’s important, because they are very very very expensive and if company changing them before they become slicks that’s a good sign. This is selective journalism at its worst! I personally know fellow pilots who fly for Allegiant, and they have said this story is bull sh*t. Every airline, and every airplane in general, has mechanical issues and in-flight emergencies. Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, etc., they all have problems too. You'll notice he said in the interview that Allegiant has never had a fatal accident. Why is that? It must be because they're so unsafe. We've grown into a culture that we expect everything we consume to be absolutely perfect. I'm sorry to tell you, but sometimes flights get bumpy. I'm not excusing mechanical oversites, but they happen, too. With every airline. There is some political reason here that Allegiant is being singled out. And for those of you freaking out from this, please understand that airplanes do not become falling rocks if there is an in-flight issue. The mechanics and pilots aren't idiots. This story is ridiculous.
@cchris8746 жыл бұрын
The reason they are being singled out is simple. Their incident record is far worse than all the other US carriers. No amount of selective journalism claims can refute this fact.

When you pay $99 for a seat (or any low amount) to sit in a seat inside a cigar tube being propelled through the sky at 550 miles an hour under high pressure with only 1/8 inch of Aluminum between you and no air, you should really think hard about that ticket you’re about to purchase and take a lesson from this documentary. I mean, I’ve done my own research a few years ago and I agree with this story. Allegiant was founds by the same man as who founded ValuJet, and has virtually the same business model. They both are low cost carriers specializing in flying to small airports/cities with less competition, and most crucially, save money on aircraft by purchasing older, used planes. Allegiant today experiences a much higher rate of incidents than just about every other major US airline, just as ValuJet did in the mid 90’s. ValuJet was founded in 1993 and grew at an incredible pace, quickly becoming one of the most profitable airlines in America. It started with 2 planes, and by the end of its first year had 15 planes. In one single 14 month period, ValuJet grew from 8 flights a day to 4 cities, to flying 124 flights a day to 17 cities. It grew so fast that it was hard for the airline to grow its maintenance plan, and mechanics were under immense pressure to get aircraft flying again, leading to mistakes and cut corners. In between January and May of 1996, ValuJet aircraft made 57 emergency landings, and on May 11, 1996 ValuJet flight 592 crashed just after taking off from Miami, killing all 110 on board. The crash was caused by a fire of maintenance equipment being improperly and illegally transported in the cargo hold. But that wasn’t their first high profile incident; just one year before, while taking off from Atlanta, a ValuJet plane suffered a catastrophic engine failure. Fortunately it was able to stop and be evacuated with no deaths, but the plane practically burned to the ground. After that incident ValuJet came under FAA scrutiny but only received minor criticisms and some fines for improper maintenance. After the crash of flight 592, ValuJet was grounded for 4 months, loosing over $55 million. In a last ditch effort to save the company, it bought AirTran Airways and underwent a reverse merger. AirTran operated with a different management and slightly different business model, using newer aircraft but still operating as a low cost carrier, growing to flying almost 700 flights a day with 140 aircraft, before being gobbled up by Southwest Airlines in 2011. Allegiant, one the other hand, was founded on the late 90’s, and transitioned into a low cost carrier after a bankruptcy in 2000. 3 of the 4 founders of ValuJet came to Allegiant and helped the airline undergo this transition, including Maurice Gallagher Jr, who has been CEO of Allegiant since 2001. When he took over, Allegiant had just 4 planes, which grew by more that 2 dozen in 4 years. It grew from carrying 80,000 passengers in 2002 to 539,000 in 2004, and to 1.9 million in 2006. But in recent years in started experiencing problems again, but this time in the safety department instead of financial. In 2015, almost half of its 86 planes broke down at least once, and the airline experienced 77 emergency landings, and has been under FAA scrutiny since October 2015. Allegiant has experienced a couple of engine fires in recent years similar to the ValuJet incident in Atlanta in 1995, although none as catastrophic, and without any fatalities. I can’t find the articles to them, although I remember that one of them occurred in Las Vegas within a few days/weeks/months of a similar fire involving a British Airways aircraft at the same airport on September 8, 2015. A few sources I used: airlinegeeks.com/2016/05/11/opinion-is-allegiant-air-the-next-valujet/ www.tampabay.com/news/business/airlines/at-allegiant-a-board-and-business-model-with-roots-in-valujet/2307005

Sounds like they have a serious engine maintenance issue. Smoke in the cabin is usually indicative of a worn out carbon seal on the compressor bearing housing. Flames and turbine wheel failures usually happens when engines exceed the cycles recommended by the engine mfg for replacement. Due to the age of the MD80s it's not surprising that most of the engines have reached their max cycles. It's apparent they don't have enough spare engines to swap out the high cycle ones so they can be torn down and rebuilt. This is a poor management safety policy. Engine cycles are required to be logged so no excuses.

The current CEO of Allegiant is the same CEO of the former airline called Valujet. Same business model. Buy cheap old 15-20 year old planes with tens of thousands of cycles. Maintain them so so (according to former Allegiant Mechanics) and fly them until they turn 25-30 years old and hope that it all goes well. ValuJet also never had a crash until it had one. When it did have one, everyone found out about their business model, they saw a drastic decrease in customers, which lead to a Merger with AirTran.

Allegiant has head less issues than Jet blue during its inauguration. This documentary is sponsored by some major airline as a campaign to put dirt on allegiant. I have worked on airplanes operated by major airlines and it’s a disgust what I have seen there. There could be issues with the airplanes which are mostly an older fleet acquired from bigger airlines but that’s not as a big issue given the fact that Southwest Airlines has same issue as they also acquire older models and refurbish them. This is a smear campaign. SDRs are filed by many other airlines. Can anyone find out how many SDRs have been filed by American and delta the last one year????

Yes, I do believe what I say, and what you say by contrast is pure speculation. One judges an airline's safety by incident frequency over time. A single passenger fatality - the first in Southwest's history - does not establish how safe or dangerous an airline is. Show me that Southwest has an incident record as abysmal as Allegiant's, and that would be a first start. You can't just take an isolated bit of data - ONE fatality, and then declare that proves it's a dangerous airline.

@Hart_Daniel6 жыл бұрын
My problem with this video is that they don't go into detail about why people are 3x more likely to have an incident. They don't claim that Allegient doesn't keep up on maintenance and that is one of the biggest factors in any safety incident. Things happen, this kind of stuff happens with any airline you choose - I feel like they are missing evidence in this video to support their reasoning. I flew Allegient once, my first time on a plane and it was completely safe.
