Yep! And I've commented about this on other videos, myself. A big BIG tip is to get over the "whip". As spinners, we're used to using speed and strength to load the rod and sent it way out there (at least I was). It's about going nice and easy. I forced myself to slow down and relax with it. And wait for that line to load behind you. The line itself will carry the fly out, not your force. In my opinion, it feels like the physics really takes place between your rod and fly line itself, and not you trying to launch a lure 80 feet. Keep it up. I literally put all my gear down and exclusively fly fished for a week and the progress is beautiful

How much of the fly line is hanging from the rod when you cast? Do you have the leader dragging in/touching the water?
@FlyFishDan

You typically want to have a full length of floating line past the tip of your rod - your entire tapered leader should be in the water prior to picking up and casting. Hope that helps!

Hey Dan, wonderful casting video, thank you! I have watched so many tutorials on casting, and no matter how much practice, I cannot shoot line out of my rod, it's driving me mad. I noticed when you hold the line tight with the left hand or tug on it during the backcast, the line starts shooting on the back cast, allowing you to double load. My line doesn't move at all. It's not the line either, I replaced it, the line does flow like butter just shaking it out. I even tried using a 6 weight line on my 5weight rod, still not helping. Is it me??? Not sure what I could be doing wrong at this point. Could it be that I have a bad rod? I'm using the Remington path. Any help would be appreciated, just want to be able to cast my line with out having to false cast! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Жыл бұрын
If your mechanics are right, you are waiting for the line to fully extend behind you, you have a quality line, if you rod arc is not too wide when casting, you have a straight line path to the tip of the fly rod, you're using a balance of power/finesse; then it could very well be the fly rod. The Redington Path is their entry level fly rod and could be part of the issue contributing to your challenges, one of the reason's I designed my own series of fly rods - everything an expensive rod brings to the table at an affordable price. Medium fast action, light weight and we use a power taper on the rod blank that leads to a very forgiving casting fly rod - perhaps something to explore. Keep at it, you will get there and it will become muscle memory for you!

Please include that breaking your wrist when cast a fly rod, even though you do it, is NOT the proper technique. 44 years of fly fishing experience, and 10 years of teaching.. breaking the wrist is the #1 issue with most peoples line not laying out flat. USING THE WRIST is not the way to teach beginners. I understand it works for you. However 90% of new casters learn horrible muscle memory by breaking their wrist during their cast. 10 & 2 is absolutely the worst teaching tool in fly casting. Im not trying to bash you. I just spend over 60 days a summer, breaking novices bad habits. Breaking the wrist is one of the hardest to break. Watch Joan Wulff cast. It is truly a work of art. :)
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your perspective, it's evident that you possess a wealth of experience and knowledge in the world of casting, as do I. Your emphasis on proper wrist positioning and the potential pitfalls of breaking the wrist during casting certainly resonates with your many years of teaching others to fly cast. While I understand your concerns about wrist technique, I'd like to respectfully offer a different point of view. It's true that some individuals may inadvertently develop bad habits if not guided properly, especially when it comes to *significant* wrist movement. However, there might be situations where controlled wrist action can be effective, particularly in adjusting for varying casting conditions, distances and the individual angler. There isn't a perfect cast...I move my wrist slightly, as does my elbow, shoulder and body - works very well for me and I catch fish consistently, even the ones rising 80 feet away. With that being said, I will include that point in future videos, thank you for your feedback here. Regarding the "10 & 2" teaching technique, you've seen The River Runs Through it right? This is the most effective 'mental discipline' to teach someone new - otherwise, their arc will resemble something like 8 & 4. I respectfully disagree with you here. As the new fly angler grows in the sport, so will their technique increasing/decreasing the arc with distance. It's evident that your insights stem from your dedication to improving the fly fishing experience for everyone, as our mine. Let's continue to celebrate the diversity of approaches in teaching and casting techniques that contribute to the rich tapestry of the fly fishing community. Cheers and FISH-ON!!

Excellent presentation! Well explained. Dan, do you fish with other techniques besides fly fishing? I am asking about using spin reel, bait casting or closed reel fishing? Was told that one may catch more fish and a lot more easily using these other techniques……that fly fishing was too slow and too difficult a technique (I.e. getting line caught in trees often. Does not happen with the other techniques.). Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you.

Oh wow I been out here casting like crazy and putting my line on the water then full casting again. I didn’t even know about false casting .
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Ай бұрын
What you are doing is water loading, and that is actually easier than trying to false cast a bunch. Once you start to perfect your personal cast, you'll only false cast maybe once or twice during any fly cast. Cheers!

Fantastic video! I've been struggling with my cast and what I was missing was managing the fly line by holding it with my non-casting hand. I have been adding line with my line hand and letting my casting hand manage the line with my index finger when casting. Can't wait to give these tricks a try.

I like to false cast a few times to better aim my distance I want to place my fly. I like to work sideways with the floats and just shooting a bunch of line out is not going to get my fly to land at the exact distance my target is. So false casting and slowly feeding line out with each cast works best for me on rivers with precise landing zones.

Man I’m new to fly fishing and I feel like I have to false cast to much to slowly get some line out. Been practicing shooting line but can figure it out.

Question. Do you use a cover on the reel handle to make it easier to use? I think Mad River calls it a Knucklehead.
@FlyFishDan

I never have - typically I chose a fly reel that’s comfortable for me to use, so that way I don’t need the gadgets.

You seem to do a very fast retrieve. Is this because you are using a streamer or just the way it’s done? Thanks!!

I always get slack in my line on my forward class. I can never seem to get the line to fully extend.
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 6 ай бұрын
I would watch your backcast - be sure that it extends all the way behind you before bringing it forward. It's likely that you are bringing the fly rod forward too soon in your cast. Give that a try and I hope it helps!

About to open a pkg this week with my first fly rod kit - Been watching fly stuff for couple months. This is by far, the best quicky on getting the line out, one of the things I was most confused about. I've had all the other basics drilled into my brain it's become instinctive. 10 and 2, that's not hard to remember as I'll date myself, those numbers were also important in our youth for another reason in high school. This filled in some big holes. I'm sure there's other great ones out there, but I just haven't seen them. Learned a lot across a broad range, but not getting the line out, the way you explained it. Sometimes, it just takes the right version to click I guess. I feel I'll be pretty decent off the go with the amount of time I've spent going to KZbin Fly Fishing school. Great job man!
