Every glider pilot dreams to fly straight in a continuous line of lift. I explain one of the phenomena, where this is possible. It is called convergence.
Normally gliders fly in thermals below clouds. But in a convergence glider pilots are able to fly next to instead of below them.
The phenomena, which i am explaining in this video is called "convergence". If glider pilots encounter such a situation, they may use it to fly dozens of kilometres straight ahead, often without loosing altitude or even gaining altitude.
I met this phenoma twice recently and luckily i had my camera with me. In this video i want to talk about it in more detail.

I've flown in convergence several times, but not yet for 100 km. Maintaining the horizontal and vertical clearances for VFR is challenging. Maintaining the correct crab angle to avoid being blown into IMC is likewise difficult. It is guess work because there is no reliable visual reference. It is fun to find convergences where there are no clouds. A real time wind indicator like Hawk or Anemoi might be useful.

Very nice explanation Rudi. I have flown some flights along the Sierra Guaderrama in Spain in convergence, but had only a very basic understanding of the process.

Thank you. Amazing video. I have a question. Did you see any UFOs? Any object that was traveling horizontally or vertically really really fast.
