Flying a Firefly in London, Kentucky

Daniel takes up a Firefly lightweight aircraft in London, Kentucky which is at an altitude of about 1200 feet. Date of flight is December 5, 2014. Takeoff is at 3:40, a low dip over a field between trees at 13:55, and landing is at 19:30.

Wow, the view is amazing. No windshield or canopy. It looks cold. I just purchased a Firestar 2, havnt flown it yet but been doing some fast taxiing with the tail up. I have a lot of time in a Quicksilver MXL but no tail dragger experience. This video makes me want to get it up.

Awesome video. I am from western Ky and have never been in the air above eastern KY but I do a lot of work in your neck of the woods. I recognized a lot of land marks... the coops (weigh stations) 75 and on your down leg I could see Corbin before you head back towards London. Pretty awesome!

Several questions: The Firefly normally has 2 lift struts per side, yours only has one. Why is that? Why is there a long white rod extending forward from the throttle lever? Your Firefly is obviously being flown under Part 103, yet it has electric start, so the engine must be remarkably light: what sort of engine are you using? Since I am rebuilding a wrecked Firestar into a Firefly, these questions are of great interest to me.

We used one wing strut, because it allowed this FireFly, to remain in Part 103, when we built this 25 foot wing span, coordinated with this 28 HP Hirth F 33 engine. The 'long white rod', would allow, the video viewer, to see the throttle movements. DANIEL BINDL [e-mail]

Never adjusted the flaps once air born... That looks like quite the fun little minimalist flyer you have there. Did your 5 year old daughter pick out the Barbie Doll hot pink airframe color for you? lol I have to say that the most impressive part for me was the low level flight directly into the parking lot. :)
