I like the glass panel for navigation but steam for my basic flight indicators. I think a mix makes the most sense for most pilots.

Hey just so you know. The Vacuum system is to keep the gyroscopic instruments spinning, not to provide air for the pitot/static instruments. This is also done electronically in some aircraft. The Pitot tube is pointed into the direction of the wind to get RAM airs The static port is pointed parallel with the wind to sense the ambient pressure. Theese ports are connected with the instruments through little bleed ports that make the instruments open systems. A vacuum system in the pitot/static line would cause inaccurate readings because the pressure would drop in the instruments.

I love steam gauges. I like having information compartmentalized and easy to read. Since I started at UND I've been flying a full g1000 and it's been an interesting transition. If you habe to do a transition, I think it would be easier to go from glass to steam, but if you can get training on both, definitely get time with both systems.

Thank you for bringing up the distracting nature of the smart devices. Kids these days would not relate to analog gauges as readily as a smart looking device. One thing is for sure - when the shit goes down and that screen breaks, glitches, freezes or whatever - you will wish you had the tried and true gyros and gimbals. Landlines phones might seem like old outmoded tech but they always work. Always.

I fly glass panels, but with the push of a button I can make the display "look like" steam guages.

That's a pretty good point. Also, there's some biggies for nighttime/weather, like synthetic vision - that are really huge safety features. Also, what about using an ipad w/an ADS-B/gps? Wouldn't that give you most (if not all) of what glass can offer, anyway?
@97TRAKIN7 жыл бұрын
Anthony Clay nowadays some manufactures are only offering glass. I'm eye balling a CTLS, a CTSW actually and you can't find those with steam. Even the 2014 Tecnam P92 Eaglet that I fly has a full glass cockpit 😕. I like steam, but glass will no doubt be a requirement in the not too distant future.

I'm really enjoying catching up on your earlier stuff... It looks like you changed your mind on the steam gauges though. ;) Congratulations again on the Mojosling. It's awesome to see such a wonderful project come together.

Don't emphasize electric power as The weak point. Glass panels can (and usually do) fail for reasons other than electric loss --- usually an electronic glitch. BTDT For backup, you want a totally independent system --- either an independent glass system (with independent pitot and ADHARS) or steam gauges

I found this, I think would be a great completely separate backup kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y32YfZeJq5dkprM

They did a study of car accidents in Britain and they found that the biggest cause of accidents was attitude not aptitude. Drivers that were aggressive or angry were the 2 main groups to be in an accident. You can give someone all the information in the world but if they ignore it then it does no good.

Do polarised sunglasses allow you to clearly see and read a glass panel ?

Garmin G1000 stupidity is an extra 150lbs in the plane because of all the extra data boxes in the tail and thats a lot in performance degradation in take off and landing when the plane is loaded up with people. Direct replacement glass panels are a much better option like Aspen evolution 2000, they are are inclusive in one package at the panel.

What happens when it freezes or dies. Electronics go out. I understand that replacing the attitude indicator and heading indicator with electronics to get rid of the suction system.

I think both have their place and both have pros and cons. Weight reduction and how often they breakdown is the question for me.

I learned to fly with steam gages and I am comfortable with them. Just like I am comfortable with the Cessna 172, that and I'm not good with high tech.

Yusir, just been on a break since I moved to a new city. No one seems to have the airplane type (DA40) that I'm used to flying around here. There is the financial part too. Need to get all things going before I jump back in the cockpit again :)

If you wanna fly professionally, then I would learn a little Glass flying because airplanes these days are G1000 style.

First Generation Pilot's Network always better to learn on steam gauges first because it’s a lot easier to transition into glass . Glass takes away the scan , if that’s all you learn on , hard to transition to steam IFR.
