Ahh, Hampton Roads, KPVG! I bought my C172 there from Lear Stevens years back. At the time they also ran the flight school there, and I spent a week getting "bootcamped" to pass my Private Pilot checkride! That was about the most fun week ever! I've been flying BasicMed since it came out, or when my last 3rd class medical expired. It's easy. It's a quick 2 page checklist any doctor can do, mine told me it's very similar. to a commercial trucker exam. You do that every 4 yrs and don't send it anywhere, just keep it stored somewhere. And there's the every 2 yr retake te online course, free from AOPA, piece of cake!

Older? I'm 67 with a valid 1st Class Medical Certificate. A buddy of mine is 74, flying Part 91 corporate Boeing Business Jet (BBJ). Another bud's kid medical'ed out of certification at age 38. It's all relative. Basic Med broadens the scope of who can fly what, and why. The important stipulation NOT mentioned here is that if you fail a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Class exam, you cannot go into Basic Med.
@davidcollier3604Ай бұрын
Just to add to this if you fail an exam, you will need to get at least 3rd Class Special Issuance first then transition to Basic Med. AOPA medical assistance is a great resource to help you get the special issuance. If you know you will fail a exam then do not do the exam (or fill out the online form) and go to Basic Med, you do not want to take an exam if you know you will fail. It's more complicated if you have a failure on your record.
@FlyingSeniorАй бұрын
@@davidcollier3604 Thanks for making that point. Also, not all AMEs get involved with Basic Med, and many MDs aren't willing to get involved with it.
@stevenhampton516Ай бұрын
Under Basic Med where do you get the allowed medication list. and vision requirement?
@davidcollier3604Ай бұрын
@@stevenhampton516 I would suggest you contact AOPA , there is not a list per se for Basic Med. It will depend on your medical condition(s).
@jhmcglynn27 күн бұрын
@@davidcollier3604wait - the reason you’re going to fail is because you have a disqualifying factor. The online exam is is very extensive and if you lie on it what you’re implying you’re a deep Doodoo if you get caught.

I am a ppg pilot flying under 103 rules because I was always told that due to brain surgery, I'll never be allowed to fly. So, with basic med, I can still pursue being a PP? I live an active & normal lifestyle. My doctors said they'd pass me if the faa would accept their endorsement. I'm on anti seizure meds my entire life for safety. I don't have them, though. Not since before 2001. I'm 31 currently.
@seanhansen9374Ай бұрын
As stated in this video, under basic med you can have the pilot plus six passengers. I don’t think that’s correct. From what I’ve read it can be a total of six people in total, and that number includes the pilot, and the plane must be authorized to carry up to only 6 people. If the plane is an 8 occupant plane you cannot fly it with passengers under basic med.
@lawrenceellison2972Ай бұрын
Nov 12 and Nov 15 brought new changes to Basic Med including the number of occupants, weight of aircraft, speed, etc. It means a lot of GA planes are now legal for Basic med pilots
@PatrickDuffy-u3s13 күн бұрын
You can get a Sport Pilot license without any medical, and with the new weight limits, you can fly a 172. Unless you want to fly commercial, there's no reason to go for PP.
@MikeKobbАй бұрын
Basic med doesn’t necessarily help your students who are having delays getting their medical, because you need to get one Third Class medical with an AME before you can go Basic Med. it definitely cuts down on hassle afterwards though.

While lowering the regulations a bit does sound great, I do have one thing to say. It's probably a better idea to have someone get a medical certificate before taking lessons. I started flying back in 1975. While in ground school one of the students went into an epileptic fit. He was on the floor shaking and writhing like a snake! Ambulance was called and we never saw him again. Imagine that happened 5000 feet up in an airplane! What could the instructor possibly do?
@williamlanphar630Ай бұрын
Mike. You say the new medical standards apply " from 18 to 70 " . I am 71 and have not flown in 30 years. Should i understand your range was just for illustration purposes ? Do the rules differ for polots older than 70 ? Thanks. 9:31

Question - Lets say I hit the lotto and am currently working on my pilots license. Now, instead of buying a used C172 I can afford an TBM940, Epic E1000 or PIlatus PC12....etc. All of these aircraft meet the stipulations for Basic Med with the exception that they are all capable of flying faster than 250 knots. With Basic Med am I regulated in the air to a maximum Vne of 250 knots or are these aircrafts not allowed to be operated by a holder of Basic Med classification?
@topofthegreenАй бұрын
Many employers will not hire pilots over 65 as the insurance costs are way too expensive.
@jasonhurdlow6607Ай бұрын
You still have to have passed a C3 before you can get BasicMed. And if you fail an AME, you can't even fly LSA anymore. Totally sucks.

I went to an ame on Aug 30th and he differed my medical because I was on ozempic and I was wondering why it's taking the faa so long so I can start flying and I just found out that it's not uncommon for someone to wait so long. I wish I knew someone that can get them to look at my file

Call your regional FAA Flight Surgeons Office for help or you can call the FAA AMCS in OK City.
@anthonyvega1959Ай бұрын
@viperdocf16 funny enough I did call the office in okc because when I signed into my application it told me to call because I have submitted my application over 60 days ago and when I call the person basically tells me what I already see on the website and just straight up hangs up on me before I could get another word out
@viperdocf16Ай бұрын
@ have they sent a letter telling you to appeal?
@anthonyvega1959Ай бұрын
@viperdocf16 I went to the ame on August 30th, it was differed at that time, the ame gave me a form to give my primary care provider to fill out with all the meds I'm on. I had that form filled out the very next day and I sent it to the faa in Oklahoma city thru ups. It got there three days later and it shows on the faa site that they received the documents but not letter from the faa as of yet. I signed into the faa site to view my application status and it says to call them because it has been in possession of my application for more than 60 days and when I called all they told me is exactly what it says on the site and when I tried to ask a question they hung up.
