Those wings are really nice. You've got a lot of room to wiggle out weight from the fuselage. Remember that your opponent there is using a skin to cover gaps, and you can do that too in many places.
@floppyhobbies2 ай бұрын
Of course. It actually turned out where the wing was super heavy and the fuselage super light (for the size). All those complex mechanisms in the wing made it super heavy but the fuselage is just empty space for the most part!
@williamfawkes83792 ай бұрын
@floppyhobbies that makes sense. Would making huge rectangle holes in the solid section of the wing, then skinning it over make a difference? Can add some bracing if needed, but probably only a couple max. That wing is so cool looking, I am super jealous.
@floppyhobbies2 ай бұрын
@@williamfawkes8379 I don't think that would make a huge difference to be honest. The weight of foamboard per square inch is actually super low, especially since if you take the paper off you remove 70% of the weight. It's so light that it's almost as light as covering! The heavy part is any glue joint (hot glue is heavy), and the cardstock skin I'm using for the flaps which is heavier than foamboard per square inch. So the fact that I had lots of small ribs in the wing and complicated multi-layer cardstock skins for the spoilers and flaps really added on to the weight. TLDR: I wouldn't be able to poke holes in anything heavy, since it needs to be that complicated shape, and anywhere I could make an opening wouldn't actually be responsible for much weight and wouldn't be worth the effort. That all being said, I'm working on a building technique to more closely mirror covered balsa, with foam taking balsa's place and using covering over foam ribs. Keep an eye out on the channel, it'll definitely appear on a project at some point in the future if it turns out to be a worthwhile technique!

Building an airliner wing for your model ? 😊 Airliners control surface are tied together and ce central control system dispatches according to flight envelope, it' s almost impossible to achieve good control without a flight controller tuned for your plane, this also include softwares support for your configuration and/or a really smart TX. Also you should never turn off the engine when slowing down the propeller acts like an air brake ! It very noticeable 😆. You have openTx add some mix to limit engine rpm when airborne ( flight mode or specific input ) the spoilers should never be available in normal flight mode, just take off/ landing, allowing you to smooth transition between modes with delays or specific curves (difficult)

@floppyhobbiesАй бұрын
I use Inkscape to design the airplane. I do not go from 3d to 2d, instead I design in 2d. My process essentially looks like getting a top profile, side profile, and cross sectional views of the fuselage at different points, and then using some simple math to make the transitions between them. I remember when I was first starting I had really wished there was a video explaining how to design an airplane like flite test. Maybe I'll make a video like that soon!

So what I did was a I made a new entry in the inputs tab that I named SPLR. I set that up on a switch so that when I flicked the switch the channel value would change -100% to +100%. Then, I went to the spoilerons in the mixing tab, because I had a separate mix for each spoileron, and I mixed in the spoiler input. I hope that helps!

If you look at 12:43 , you can see Zach use the spoilers for their intended use. He's able to descend almost straight down while still retaining control. I think you won the competition actually, because your opponent uses more the propeller than the wings to stay in the air. Someone even says "Do airplane mode." when he does half helicopter mode. But your airplane can do helicopter mode even better, as we see at 12:31. So in helicopter mode your plane does actually fly slower than the other one. And also if both planes would do pure airplane mode I guess. Helicopter-mode is considered cheating imho. So why not trying to fly slow in pure glider mode without the motor spoiling the result?
@floppyhobbiesАй бұрын
That's actually a really good idea for testing slow flight, the next time both those airplanes are out at the field I might try that. I'll be sure to reply with the result here if I do!
@Cyndertruly2 ай бұрын
your top speed brake needs to overlap with the controllable flaps. that's why it tipped forward as it provided downforce before the cg.
@Cyndertruly2 ай бұрын
it will reduce control efficiency in terms of energy retention so you might need a larger battery.
@Cyndertruly2 ай бұрын
if you want an easy fix, bend the gear slightly forward increasing the rake and reducing drag. it will increase speed and allow for a larger battery aft cg.
@floppyhobbies2 ай бұрын
They actually do overlap! I only experience downforce issues if I'm travelling at high speeds when I extend the spoilers. I think that's because they act less to stall the top of the wing, and more to increase the pressure on top of it, making negative lift. At lower speeds, they just kill the lift and it works exactly how I wanted it to.
