Giles - that 10,000 ft climb was no stunt. It was a wickedly good leap of faith that you and your machine could do it - and you did it - bravo! As you started your descent, I couldn't help wonder how many people in this terrestrial world have experienced what you did - lying back in a recliner with a prop enjoying such a fabulous view above the clouds with all windows open - wow. I now need to get off my recliner and get up there. Many thanks. Liam

Very nice flight. It gets so cold up there. Years ago I used to hang glide quite a bit in south eastern Arizona. In the middle of summer we all dressed in down filled parkas and thermal underwear because we routinely flew to 14,000 to 15,000 feet ASL over the Huachuca Mountains. It is a fantastic place to fly.

It was an incredible place. I got to 18.500 one day, and my friend flew 218 miles the same day. It's called Miller Canyon. The highest peak is about 9,300 ft ASL, so I was over 9,000 feet above it.

@huffpappy3 жыл бұрын
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Unfortunately I didn't carry oxygen. I did get a bit hypoxic and my friend called over the radio to convince me to get out of the thermal which was taking me to cloud base at 500 FPM up. Cloud base as still 1,00 to 2,000 feet above me when I flew out of that thermal.I remember getting a bit of tunnel vision, I helt a bit dull headed, and I had a headache the rest of the day. It wasn't a particularity smart thing to do, but I was young and didn't have a lot of wisdom at the time. I know I'd pass out now long before getting to that altitude now(I'm over 60 now). It's just one of those things I survived that I can tell my grand kids. There's a place in Idaho called King Mountain where the FAA has allowed a 22,000 feet ASL ceiling for hang gliders. It is common practice to fly with oxygen at that site. My flight was back in 1989, and oxygen was seldom used back then.

Still very cold, especially sitting in a 40mph wind. Good effort. Congratulations on getting to 10k ft!

He Roy, I hope your journey is full of fun and adventures. Yes the 4 different types of lapse rates and wind chill all have an influence on how cold we get. Good evening David, I hope you are well? Hopefully not so frosty, I'll be staying lower now..unless I want a tail wind, but then I just have to come down again. The QNH and ISA were close, so I didn't, but you are correct, I should have swtiched at the 3000ft transition height. I was still in class G but that doesn't change the fact, I was being , teeny tiny bit gash ( I'll take the slap on the wrist from you). It's so strange when look at height, up to 3k, feels high, but after that, its just like google maps, in real life. I don't feel high. I suppose have the motion of the clouds helped. Being really high and not having a reference of motion is a bit disconcerting, I had that on my paramotor high altitude flight. I wouldn't call me brave, a bit silly possibly ;). Great vid as usual, but with your aviation knowledge, and experience, are you considering PPL licence?, or just staying as you are?
@GolfFoxtrot223 жыл бұрын
hello MJOTD !, I did have a PPL (A) back in 1996, flew spam cans out of Norwich Airport but I had to let it lapse in 2000. I did think about it a few years ago but the biggest issue was and is cost. I can't afford to own or hangar a group A aircraft. The PeaBee may be slower and have a few less dials and buttons but I really enjoy flying it and taking it to fly-ins. Glad you enjoyed the video and I hope that answered your question.

What is it that makes flying above the clouds so much fun? What a gorgeous scenery up there, just love it! 😀 You beat me to my attempt to determine the max service ceiling of my plane, which has been canceled 3 times due to bad Wx 😕🙈 My goal is FL140. Hopefully both my plane and me will get that far up. Question; what is the transition altitude and -level in the UK?

It wasn't just a stunt brother! You flew responsibly obeying all rules. I did the same thing back before 2007 when we could fly to 17,999'. I went to 14,500' near the Petrified Forest in northeastern Arizona in my 582 Northwing Apache. By then my rate of climb had dropped to 300' per minute.
@GolfFoxtrot222 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I was limited by our UK Air law to 10k anyway. If you have a cheeky look at a video I made in my early KZbin days of me flying to 21,746 ft on a paramotor. It's a long way down in a flying armchair 😂. Your high flights sound quite amazing and yes it's amazing how the climb rate drops off, good effort.

Rite of passage? 10,000 ft. Have you done a vid of your heating system? or did I hear wrong. Power supply to camera, would be interested in that subject. I think it's the vulnerability and exposure that can freak one out. Great video Giles.
@GolfFoxtrot223 жыл бұрын
Hello there, yes it was kind of a rite of passage. The only heating had was the gloves (30Seven). Th power to the wing camera was just a USB battery booster housed inside the wing pocket. Having been to over 4 miles up on a paramotor, its was slightly more comfortable this time. Have a look in the description for that one.

Ahh, the experience of lapse rate. I thought you were sniffing a bit in the pre take off comments. Got me worrying if your Eustachian Tubes might suffer at 10,000'. Perhaps the sniffing sounds were not a head cold. You didn't seem to experience any ear pain. 🙂

Hi John, it was just a little sniffle from the running around on the ground. Thank you for your concern, I'd never fly with a cold, the risk is too great.

@GolfFoxtrot223 жыл бұрын
If its the microlight side ( assuming you are in the UK) its 25 hours, I'm not sure on total cost as each school have different hourly costs. Have a look here. www.bmaa.org/information-library/pilot-licensing/pilot-licensing---pilots. If it's Sub 70, this video might give you a better idea of what is required and the costs is significantly less. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqrCfpKsapmcsMU If I've not answered your question please let me know the specifics, other than cost, which is very hard to give an accurate figure as some people take long to get to the required standard,

I've been to over 19,000ft on MOGAS, but that was a paramotor. I've had a quick read to make sure I wasn't breaking any parts of the ANO by doing so, CAP 747 only pertains to Permitted/certified aircraft engine. As my PeaBee is SSDR and the engine only certified for MOGAS RON 95, as far as I can glen, the restriction does not apply. Is your caps lock stuck on?
