Descended through a cloud deck, in IMC maybe ten minutes in a fast Mooney 201. Landed Lake Tahoe - 1/2 inch of ice on the leading edges. Getting into icing conditions is no joke and requires immediate action to prevent an accident. Remember the Roselawn IND AT-72 crash years ago...the place was fully equipped for icing conditions, except the ice that day was supercooled ice droplets that quickly overwhelmed the aircraft AND revealed a design flaw that allowed it to accumulate ice BEHIND the protected leading edge of the wings that built up to a point that one wing stalled, and threw the aircraft out of control. They hit the ground at 375 kts.

We fly a G2 SR-22 with TKS only. It's great peace of mind but living up north, we still can't fly 4+ months out of the year so naturally I'm considering a FIKI upgrade. Hoping the new G7 Cirrus puts some downward pressure on G5 and G6 prices!
@SlowAsianDriver11 ай бұрын
I'm sure it will. I recently sold this plane and ordered a new G7. I've already got offered a newer G6 with less hours than mine for less money than what we sold it for.

When you’re doing your pre flight planning just wondering if you ever consider when in the ice what if the engine quit? What’s your thoughts? Cirrus is a very capable IFR aircraft but still only a single engine. Not sure if I’d Plan on being in the ice in any piston single for a climb.
@SlowAsianDriver7 ай бұрын
Even if Cirrus has FIKI, it’s not meant to be in the ice. When I plan, i always plan an “out”. On this leg I knew we will be punching through a relatively mild layer to get on top of the layers. It was only for a short duration hence we made a go decision.

Love your content. Having a certified FIKI aircraft is something I would love - I've had to cancel quite a few Angel Flight missions during winter Down Under because of forecast icing.

I was IFR on top , got vectored into the soup ,entered the ILS with some pucker factor . My 172 was covered. 10 more minutes I might have made a new runway . On the way outwent through quickly , no problem .

Great video. Merry Christmas. I have about 80 hours in an sr22 and a sr20. I need to finish getting my license and prefer a 20. Where would you recommend training for ppl? I don’t mind the older pre g1000 either. Thanks. My local school lost their cirrus.
@SlowAsianDriver2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend an honest plane like the C172 for your PPL. C172 is not glamorous, but it’s built like a tank…it better have a hard landing (aka controlled crashes) on the school’s C172 than your Cirrus. If you can get one with a G1000, it will help with future transition to the Cirrus avionics. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Nice video - is ‘high’ anti-ice setting necessary for the amount of ice you were getting you think?
@SlowAsianDriver Жыл бұрын
Looking back…not necessary at all. This was my first time PIC in icing conditions, I didn’t know what to expect and i just wanna play it safe.

I don't understand why you would fly into known icing conditions.
@SlowAsianDriver Жыл бұрын
b/c the plane is FIKI (Flight Into Known Icing) equipped.
@rdawgz866 Жыл бұрын
If you live in the Northeast US or any other cold area you basically would have to cancel any flights with a cloud in the sky if you didn't have this equipment. Basically vfr only for the winter. Depending on your use for the plane as long as it's capable and the pilot is proficient with the equipment it can be safely done. And just so you know the fiki system is more to get out of ice such as transitioning layers than to fly in it. The system is excellent.

Amazing video. I’ve flown with a friend multiple times but do not have my license. What advice would you give someone in my shoes who plans on purchasing a sr22 someday. Any specific training to focus on for this type of plane?
@SlowAsianDriver2 жыл бұрын
Please focus on the basics and get your license first. Do it in an honest plane i.e. C172 or Piper. Once you have your private, then jump on your instrument rating. Training in a Cirrus SR22 (or even the 20) is like learning to drive in a Ferrari. You should also consider joining COPA (Cirrus Owner's & Pilot's Association). Any questions feel free to reach me on IG (same name). Happy Holidays!

Buy a Beechcraft
@SlowAsianDriver Жыл бұрын
We actually did look into the G36. I think it’s a better built plane, however, much to our surprise it’s actually slower and has less useful load than the SR22.
@johnwallace6701 Жыл бұрын
@@SlowAsianDriver Well that's good to know. My older A36 has more useful load than the newer G's. But we don't have AC. I love the BO. Double doors. Beech just doesn't do the marketing right like Cirrus does, they want to sell King airs and jets. Which I have flown too. Just be super careful in the ice, please.
@rdawgz866 Жыл бұрын
I have 200 hours in a SR22 and that's all I fly now, I do not believe it's a good training or beginner airplane. As others have said a Cessna 152 or 172 or the equivalent pipers is the way to start.

Am curious what are the capabilities of it, like can you depart in snow or freezing rain?
@SlowAsianDriver2 жыл бұрын
Freezing rain and wet snow, is a hard no. It comes down to what type of freezing layer(s) you have above. If SLD is in the forecast it's best to stay put.
