If I ever reach my dream of being able to own a helicopter, this is how I am going to spend every single 4th of July and New Years. Absolutely the BEST seat in the house.

On January 7, 1967, John Steinbeck found himself in the midst of a war-torn landscape at Pleiku, Vietnam, where he experienced an exhilarating flight aboard a UH-1 Huey helicopter with D Troop, 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry. As he soared through the skies, Steinbeck was mesmerized by the pilots’ extraordinary skill and grace. In his vivid recollection, Steinbeck compared the helicopter pilots to artists in their prime. "I wish I could tell you about these pilots," he wrote, his words brimming with admiration. "They make me sick with envy. They handle their helicopters with the same finesse and control as a master rides a finely trained quarter horse. They glide along stream beds, swoop up like swallows to clear trees, and twist and turn with the elegance of swifts in the twilight sky." Steinbeck’s awe extended to the pilots’ hands and feet, which danced across the controls with a precision he likened to the movements of cellist Pablo Casals. To him, their coordination was nothing short of musical, their actions a blend of artistry and athleticism. "Their hands are like those of musicians," he wrote, "playing their controls with a touch that is both delicate and commanding. They make me jealous because I yearn to experience that mastery myself." Yet, as much as Steinbeck was captivated, he was also painfully aware of his own limitations. "I know I can never achieve this,” he confessed. "My hands are too old and forgetful to respond to the commands of updrafts, side winds, and ground fire with the precision required. All I can do is admire and revel in the joy of witnessing it." Steinbeck’s reflection was a burst of raw emotion, a heartfelt outpouring of his longing and wonder. He concluded with an apology for his "leak of ecstasy," revealing how deeply the pilots’ artistry had touched him. Through his eyes, their aerial ballet was not just a feat of skill but a profound and inspiring display of human capability.

Another cool video. So to fly at night using IFR you need instrument rating and correct navigation lights? Is that all that's required?

You can fly VFR at night.

Think you got the bad end of the deal with the whole helicopter ride for borrowing a busted up old 4 wheeler that you ended up having to use a full days worth of calories trying to pull out. 😂

I'm starting to watch this video and I have a question. Isn't it illegal to fly through fireworks? Aren't you concerned about losing your license? I remember not too long ago where a pilot lost his license for participating in a fireworks gig where a person in a heli was firing fireworks at a car and the car was firing fireworks back at the heli. Granted there's no fireworks on board, still, I'd be concerned.

You described an entirely different situation than a pilot simply flying way above the ceiling for regular civilian fireworks

Do you require permission to land?
@zenexhd58553 ай бұрын
Yeah he does require permission to land at restaurant, parks etc but anywhere with land that doesn’t have human activity like big fields with no restaurants and shopping places and stuff like that, he doesn’t need permission for I think

mmm I dunno, looks kinda fake. At the altitude you flying at, the fireworks would've hit your heli. If you were really that high up, you wouldve reach the Stratosphere (edge of space), and that's not possible with a helicopter buddy. FYI fireworks typcially go up atlest 5k feet buddy.
@notbrant27923 ай бұрын
A lot of confidence from someone who did zero research. Your average 3" shell goes about 210 feet up. 5k feet is just absolutely absurd.

Umm I’ve seen fireworks the most and average is like 300 too 200 something bruh research. 🔬
