The truly magnificent and sadly missed Brian Hibbard always wore the mullet and 'boards from his early days in tv. A great Welshman, a great man.

I'd never heard of Flying Pickets until today. This is a fabulous rendition of the Big O's song. Brian Hibbard has a wonderful voice and the backing vocalists are all excellent. Huge respect. ....from Ron in Perth, Australia.

The original song Only the lonely was written by Bill Dee's and Roy Orbison in 1960. Roy Orbison was also the interpret with fantastic voice over several oktaves. The cover version of the Flying pickets Is still the best one

The Flying Pickets are still going but with an all new line up. As far as I know the only one from this line-up still performing is Red Stripe (the bald one - otherwise known as David Gittins) who has an act still going in Perth Australia. The boys are in their late 60s early 70s now.

They had 2 big hits and this along with the other few songs they did hardly sold. They even tried covering another Yazoo song hoping to have similar success but it didn't sell. Many reason why, extreme political views, very unmarketable appearance, novelty doesn't last long. Difficult to sell posters and merchandise of these, they looked like different incarnations of Dr Who. Poor choice of songs, the late 50s early 60s revival period was over. A capella was popular then, many reasons for them not having an enduring chart success. You may or may not like my summing up, but for all those that say " why didn't this become a hit" or " music from back then was better" I'll just say.. " the people of the time, didnt like it so didn't buy it. It wasn't a big hit because those who were buying records at the time spent thier money on other records
