absolutely timeless - Heaton genius I was at Brixton Academy - Dec 1989 - "Welcome to the Beautiful South" Great gig... right up to near the end of the concert when some muppet from the crowd throws a plastic bottle at the band on stage - they all down instruments and walk off - last words into the mic "You're all a bunch of fu#@ing Londoners" ... pure Heaton genius. Hard to believe nearly 34 yrs has passed - but the music of my youth - still keeps me young ( well on the inside - the outside may have deteriorated a bit over time!!)

This was my parents wedding song. I was 2 and their bridesmaid in 1995. They split before we lost my Mum in 2015. But my Dad, on the note with the flowers at her funeral said:, “I love you ‘till my fountain, pen runs dry”. That line each time - gets me. This song brings so much happiness but also so much sadness at the same time. That’s how you know it’s a great song.

You, uh, you do know what the song's about, right? It's not a love song. It's a song about someone that seduces women, just so he can have inspiration to write love songs. He doesn't love them, he's just using them. I'm sorry, but your dad insulted your mother. 'I love you 'till my fountain pen runs dry' means 'I love you until your use to me has run out'.

I grew up in the early 90s, and i remember my parents playing these songs to me and my sister as children. Never knew what the words meant, because of the language, but i remember the rythm and the sweet melodies, and they gave me great comfort. A feeling i will always carry with me, like an untouched treasure deep inside. And i am forever thankful for the Beautiful South for giving me this sweet piece of my childhood i will always carry with me.

Likewise in every single aspect, sister included! ! I was probably 9 or 10 when I first started listening to ‘carry on up the charts’ at home and in my dad’s Rover 400. Such a beautiful clever song, the melody, the voices, can be innocently interpreted as a story about a guy head over heels in love but then you realise it’s about a writer breaking hearts to inspire his songs to make a living, equally as tragic.
@owenmcgee84965 жыл бұрын
Or else it is simply a song about a muse designed to amuse. Once upon a time every writer, even of songs, was presumed to have a muse, but whoever it was remained a mystery because it wasn't actually anybody; it was only an idea of inspiration that somehow was also "real" because it gave birth to a creation of something new. A song, a book; whatever. Tis a funny song about song writing that reminds me a little of the Trashcan Sinatras at this moment...

I was writing a song for a long lost love, a girl named Alyson. Suddenly one day this song came, makes me cry and I don't know why.

Born and still live in Hull. Paul and the gang were always out and about. Played Sunday football against Paul a few times. Always had time for fans, down to earth and nice bloke. Think he eventually went back home to Manchester but talks about his time in Hull fondly. Great band and they’ve definitely left their mark in the music industry

At last!!! God knows why all the official Beautiful South videos were taken off KZbin, there's a huge number of fans of this brilliant band, Paul Heaton still having Top 3 albums over 30 years since his first with the Housemartins! 😊 👏
