You don't get automatic upgrades from qatar Airways. Agents at the gate personally do the upgrades based on your travel or loyalty with them. You have been flying with them from LHR to CMB, so you had two sectors. That's why they upgraded you to business for free. They keep sending passengers the option to upgrade their seats for a fee first. This is not the case if they can sell all the seats in the business class as well. This is not really a luck by chance, but the airline looks at the potential travel you may consider to travel with them in the future.

In reality, when economy class is overbooked, airlines may upgrade some frequent flyers, Gold or Silver card members, or even their own staff to Business Class. Sometimes, they may also upgrade existing economy class passengers to Business Class to accommodate these situations.
