One year in India with the ODK. That’s the oriental dwarf kingfisher. It’s way more exciting than it may seem. What a place. The sounds of the forests are AMAZING. Need to switch off for an hour? What this. You’ll come back refreshed and calm. Enjoy.

It's my Cockatiel's HATCHDAY, so we're watching bird docs today! He has to hide from some of these mating shots cuz he IS only 4! Lovely free doc. I watch a lot of stuff like this, and having the narrator track his goings on visiting the sites of these gorgeous Kingfishers feels surprisingly intimate. It has the style of a typical "prestige" style detached nature narrator but some of the familiarity of a host led nature show. It's very notable as many naturalists have spilled ink for centuries about how best to advocate for nature, with "scientific" detachment or "over anthropomorphizing" involvement. Personally, I think it's best to find a balance between sentiments. Remember, when Jane Goodall was naming the gorillas she was studying, it was seen as foolish and unscientific even though her work was so vital. I'm so used to very distant narration in nature docs, so this one describing their distress looking for birds after a storm and delight seeing birds roosting at night extremely refreshing. Its wild how much "this morning, I watched this hornbill" changes the framing.

As a birder, i couldn't resist clicking on this video, ...just long enough to see the gorgeous bird in the photo, I told myself. I was pulled in to watch every minute. Birds are fascinating. This seasonal glimpse into a pair of Oriental Dwarf Kingfishers nesting lives captured my full attention. 💖 Thank you for making this documentary!!

I've lived in Thailand for 22 years, and 'do' bird rescue on our little island. I've actually had 2 of these wonderful little birds to care for in the past few years. One was badly injured after flying into a window (sadly it didn't make it), and the other was brought to me after a storm. It was exhausted, and probably hadn't eaten during the almost 3 days and nights of strong wind and heavy rain. It was wonderful to see it fly off after 3 or 4 days of care... like a jewel in flight! I ended up with almost a dozen different birds over the days following the storm, but that amazing little Asian Kingfisher taking off towards the mountain is a memory that will stay with me...

These are amazing birds, in India too they are found flying into the windows especially the glass normally end of monsoons , keep up the good work of saving birds my friend

Thanks for sharing! The closest I've ever come in TX is being fortunate enough to touch a hummingbird saving it. I even had to jostle one out of a spider web once! Those Kingfishers are incredible and it's no wonder they have inspired so much myth and art among the peoples of their home.

Kingfisher birds were hunted for their velvety feathers. However, due to strict Animal protection laws that has reduced. There is this white breasted kingfisher that blessed me with its presence one morning when I was in my balcony ( India). I couldnt believe how beautiful, vibrant, velvelty feathers it has. Such a mesmerising bird.

I have always enjoyed nature documentaries, but they became almost a guilty pleasure during the pandemic lockdown. It was, and still is, very soothing to be able to "travel" to exotic locations around the globe and see how other species survive. There is not a mask anywhere and many members of the animal kingdom are barely 6 inches apart, never mind 6 feet.
