London & Northeastern Railway Class A3 4-6-2 Pacific 4472 "Flying Scotsman" in America.
In the summer of 1970, the locomotive operated on the second leg of its United States tour that took the engine from Boston, MA to San Francisco, CA over a three-year period. This footage follows the engine across Missouri to St. Louis on the former Wabash as we celebrate the world famous Flying Scotsman for the 100th birthday.
This video was provided to us by Hunter Lohse, who owns the original Super 8mm footage originally filmed by A.L. Howe. Thumbnail provided by Jason Fields.

It was really cool to see the LNER Flying Scotsman touring the United States. And it’s almost the 100th birthday of Flying Scotsman. Only a couple days away. It would be cool to see a American steam locomotive to tour around the world like Flying Scotsman. We all know the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 and LNER Flying Scotsman are equally famous in the whole world.

There is an ex-US Army steamer running in the Worth Valley Railway. It’s having an Indian summer, hauling Pullmans through Brontë country. It’s also been to Poland. Must admit it’s quite funny to hear the American hooter in Yorkshire!

This footage is amazing! Such high quality footage for its time with sound where we get to hear its North American whistle, also in high quality. In this video, we also get to see some of the final footage of Flying Scotsman's cowcatcher painted red and some of the first footage of its cowcatcher painted black since the repainting of its cowcatcher from red to black was done in St. Louis and this video is of Flying Scotsman in Missouri in 1970. Very nice narration too!

The exhibition train comprosed 1 Corridor Brake Composite (BCK), 5 Thompson LNER full brakes (as the exhibition coaches), 2 Pullman Cars, and one of the former 'Devon Belle' observation cars, so 9 coaches in all.

Did you actually know that the famous locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as the Flying Scotsman happens to be the only sole-surviving brother of Gordon the Big blue livery paintwork-carrying L N E R class A0 pacific type of steam-driven railway tender locomotive? It's completely obviously clear that it's quite amazingly outstandingly true! It'd been very consistently well-knowingly mentioned in the movie titled The Great Race when Thomas met him over @ Vicarstown station when Gordon the Big L N E R class A0 pacific type of steam-driven railway tender locomotive explained everything straight to Thomas the Tank Engine!

Something that’ll always puzzle me is why didn’t Pegler arrange for the Scotsman to take part in the Golden Spike Centennial celebrations that were going on in 1969? It would’ve made for a fantastic show of goodwill towards America for Britain’s most famous steam locomotive to take part in the 100th anniversary celebrations of one of the biggest achievements in American railroad history.

The correct name is the "London and North Eastern Railway" - L N E R. I remember seeing the "Flying Moneypit" at Twickenham in 1969 when it collected some of the exhibition train coaches.

@@daskriegsman7013 Exactly what the first two do, but instead of two cylinders the engine has three. There are examples of American engines with three cylinders, arguably the most notable being the Shays. Three cylinders make for more even power distribution as there are six power strokes instead of four, all set so no two hit dead center at the same time.

Question... Did 4472 ever run over GTW rails, back in the early '70's? I seem to think so in that the "click-bait" panel before the video, shows her unmistakably pulling out of Dearborn St. Station, but to where? (it's a long story). Your thoughts?

Did you actually know that the famous locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as the Flying Scotsman happens to be Gordon the Big L N E R class A0 pacific type of steam-driven railway tender locomotive's only sole-surviving brother who happen to got saved from the horrifyingly horrible faith of getting cut up into pieces by the Scrapper's torch in the early 1960s by Alan Pegler who'd seriously generously preserved the Flying Scotsman for a complete well-known total of exactly £3,000,000 before officially SIMPLY restoring the famous locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as the Flying Scotsman by getting freshly repainted into his own originally official L N E R apple green livery paintwork instead of the official B R green livery-carrying paint that he's basically wearing nowadays? It's completely obviously clear to be exactly 100% true SINCE that's basically what I personally found out through some research! Unfortunately, during the official 4-year-long USA rail tour @ some point, Alan Pegler SERIOUSLY just suddenly had become officially bankrupt UNTIL Sir William McAlpine kindly stepped in to help with continuing the rail tour in the USA by returning the Flying Scotsman back to his home in the U K for a short while before taking the Flying Scotsman overseas again to Australia where the famous locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley in the 1920s known as the Flying Scotsman had obviously set another fine speed record RIGHT UNTIL he eventually also apparently went bankrupt some years later! Nowadays, the famous locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as the Flying Scotsman resides over the National Railway Museum in York along with other engines including the famous L N E R class A4 Pacific type of steam-driven railway tender locomotive designed by the famous Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as Mallard? It's completely obviously clear to be exactly 100% true! Also, apparently for another well-known fact, it's completely obviously clear that I'm personally quite amazingly outstandingly easily very much considerably thinkin' really hard 'bout purchasing the Flying Scotsman for free as a specifically awesome way to enter a new official era of preservation INCLUDING OFFICIALLY just givin' him such a great American origin-styled overhauling upgrade that certainly includes a new black colored cowcatcher to prevent livestock from getting seriously hurt if they EVER stray onto the tracks, a certain set of official American origin-styled automatic buckeye coupling devices on the front of the locomotive as well as on the back of the pair of corridor tenders that I've especially wanted to build specifically for the Flying Scotsman, a very specifically bright high-intensity headlamp to help with seeing very well in the really dark tunnels alongside the observation of fog as well as when working officially @ night, a really shiny brass bell to ring loudly over @ grade crossings during long distanced passenger runs with a train of officially considered American origin-styled coaches that are officially fitted with official corridors like the pair of corridor tenders, an official American origin-styled steam whistle that sounds EXACTLY LIKE the whistle from the movie titled The Great Race when Thomas met him over @ Vicarstown station BEFORE mentioning 'bout taking part in the Great Railway Show happening over on the mainland, official American origin-styled air-brakes to stop the the train when the Driver applies 'em in the stations very easily! In fact, it's completely obviously clear that I personally also apparently for another fact think that the famous locomotive designed by the famous locomotive designer known as Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as the Flying Scotsman certainly WOULD DEFINITELY look EXACTLY 100% MUCH BETTER than he'd been before when he's obviously been totally refitted with a new funnel that seriously WON'T even block the Flying Scotsman's crew's view of the tracks meaning that the famous locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley very much considerably well-known as the Flying Scotsman certainly indeed 100% DEFINITELY WON'T BASICALLY be needing those German-styled smoke deflectors!
