Flying Scotsman had rocks thrown at it, was shot at, fired to hell, drove almost non-stop for 50 thousand miles, was rusted to hell for three and a half years, but even after all of that, she could still pump her pistons. What a legend.

I saw it back in May 1968 when it did the non-stop run from London to Edinburgh. At the time, there were no watering facilities in Edinburgh and it made its way to my local shed, Dunfermline (62C) for water and coal. The last steam engine ever to visit the shed.

Also little side note, one of the rolling stock used in the tour was the Devon Belle Observation car no.14...after Scotsman left the US, the coach was left behind for a number of years in San Fransisco and attached to a office building. in 2007, it was repatriated to the UK and now resides on the Swanage Railway, actually reuniting with Scotsman in early 2019

Happy 100th to Flying Scotsman! While we weren't alive to see Scotsman while in America, I'm sure if we could trave back to those days, we would do anything we can to make sure Peglar didn't have to declare bankruptcy and appreciate the entire train much more than the people who were there. Scotsman has many amazing stories from his life and it's no mystery why no one can't dislike Scotsman in the least.

I heard of the fear of Flying Scotsman being converted into a restaurant from NWR1991 in his NWR Tales Timeline video. He told me in a comment in Gordon’s Fallout that it would’ve been designed like you’re dining in an express train in the 1920s. And then I replied by saying that it reminded me of a restaurant in an episode of The Simpsons where the family eats at a restaurant converted from a wrecked passenger train.

Probably the only railway steam engine to circumnavigate the planet. I have read about what was required to bring the engine to Australia in 1987-88. One of the organizers put his house up as guarantee that the engine would return. It is unlikely such an event will happen again as the shipping and cranes are not available as they once were.

I just saw the Märklin Flying Scotsman announcement about an hour ago, they mentioned it went on a US tour but that was it. I was immediately curious about it. This video is perfect timing. Really a Barge? I live there. The logistical time of loading and unloading it would have been the same as just going via San José. Actually it wouldn't have even needed to go that far, the Dumbarton Rail Bridge would still be operable then. Crazy to see the SF Embarcadero rail infrastructure intact though. All that's left is the Pier 43 Ferry Arch and a repurposed Roundhouse building.

Thankyou for Uploading this. It was great to hear a much more detailed telling of Flying Scotsmans USA tour. I no idea of the Dash to San Fransisco to make the British Day event. Nor did I realise just how much trouble it was in. Not only just being left to the elements, but the lawyers and creditors sniffing around like vultures, trying to take the whole engine. Personally Im not a fan of Flying Scotsman, i dont like its aesthetics, give me a GWR Castle any day. It also cost way way too much to bring it back into steam. I've heard many figures banded around but £4.5million sounds about the average. It cost £3.5 Million to build Tornado from scratch! The money could of been spent bringing 3 or 4 engines back to life again.
