That's pretty true. Because As of September 2023, at least 128 Airbus A340s are still flying with several operators and across 4 variants : 8 A340-200 (this is the rarerest A340 variant btw) 65 A340-300 17 A340-500 and 38 A340-600. Another interesting fact is no one has ever died in the Airbus A340 accidents or incidents

Emirates flight 407 was due to pilot error, they miscalculated their takeoff data with an MTOW that was 100 tonnes below the real weight. They also extended the flaps 10° to little and only applied FLX thrust when they should have used TO/GA

The reason that this aircraft is so underpowered comes to this: for a long time, aircraft that needed to fly really long distances over the ocean or over really desolate areas needed to have at least three or four engines so if one failed, they could make it to another airport safely. Airbus decided to slap some underpowered engines on the a340 early versions, but the later versions have some more powerful engines.

I remember when Airfrance had operations to Bogotá Colombia with the A340-300, OMG that airplane used all the 3800mts of runway to take off and had so much performance issues to gain altitude. Iberia used the 340-600 and still suffered but not as much as the Airfrance 340.

I flew the a340-300 abt 6 times and it was my first plane. Due to the small engines its verry quietand the slow climb is also relaxing. Its the sleepy bus but the comfortable bus. And when an engine dies, you could continue the flight.

can we just get it clear the A340-200/300 are the CFM-56 powered ones which are deemed "underpowered" however the A340-500/600 has the Trent 500s which are more than enough powerful. Its a bit of a lie that the A340 is underpowered otherwise it wouldnt be certified to fly, the same engines (CFM-56s) are also used on later updated DC-8s and Boeing 707s, and to prove my point most 707 AWACS that fly in the sky use the CFM-56 however they do not feature reverse thrust. The A340 is just not as powerful as its competitors, hence why it has slower climb rates. This was done however for cost-effectiveness which has proven well and it is also cheaper to run

IAE was in the process of designing a SuperFan variant of the V2500 called the V2500SF for Airbus for this model of the A340. It would’ve been a more powerful, geared turbofan version of the V2500. But IAE cancelled the development last minute and Airbus was stuck with CFM being the sole supplier.
