The mosquito is fascinating in its design, capabilities and construction. The mosquito was, Ridiculously fast, invisible to radar, light so could carry larger bombs AND was so good the germans were scared of it. Construction wise, they used WOOD and used carpenter's to build it due to the fact that metal workers were working on ships and tanks as a priority. This thing had 4 regular machine guns and 4 20mm cannons... that was the base setup. My favourite variant the Mk.18 had 4 machine guns and a 57mm cannon that would be used in tandem with the U-boat hunters. They'd patrol and spot a U-boat surfaced, and dive down and hit the top down with said cannon putting holes into the submarine so it couldn't submerge and since the armour was at its thinnest at the top and bottom... it would penetrate the armour and render submerging impossible. They'd fly home, call in the location and send the submarine hunters to go after it. Hell, they even bombed raidio antennas in germany during a broadcast. Ther germans then decided to copy the mosquito... Didn't help though, they lost the war. This plane genuinely is fantastic.

Correct! Also note: the wood used in aircraft and boat construction is almost entirely plywood, which is handy stuff: light, very strong, and comprised of what many would refer to as wood chips.. Birch, pine, etc....many possible sources. What a plane!

It was an awesome use of labour, the UK had people otherwise just off making stuff like instruments or canoes and if you can channel that into the war effort, net gains all around. Composite timbers are very strong, hit yourself with a skateboard and you'll soon find out that they're much tougher than the average person gives them credit for.
@advorak8529
@advorak8529 Күн бұрын
Germany did the same thing, since wood was not a strategic (i.e. in short supply) material. And a lot of things could be built by people who’d otherwise be making cabinets and furniture.

@@RamonInNZ Just like the Roman shields, just add a metal rim protection and a buckler-like grip to hold it. Plywood is OLD. And good.

The Mosquito is excellent bait, because total war & the Gestapo isn’t enough of a motivator, it also carried a Reichmark bounty in WW2! Combined with a “god-damn” open throttle speed it was glued together especially for that role 😹
