It's a damned shame and a permanent black spot on the military leadership of that era that they treated General Claire Lee Chennault so shamefully all through his career but especially at the few months before the end of the war. I volunteered at a WWII flight museum back in the mid/late 90's and we had a special event. I got to spend the day and have dinner with Tex Hill and several other pilots and crew. Unfortunately, I have a brain tumor and most of my memory of that day and night is gone. I still remember having the feeling that I was surrounded by greatness, that day. I also have pictures with Tex Hill, Dick Rossi, Major General Charlie Bond and Cavanaugh's son and others. Plus a flying tiger print with all their signatures on it. I was hoping this video would trigger some of my memory, and it did. But only a little. I dont know if my print with their signatures on it is worth anything, but Mr. Sinise if you want when I die, I will leave it to you in my will. I have no kids or anyone to leave it too. We Chinese have been taught for thousands of years to repay kindness and hope that good people in the world can find peace.

When I was in my mid-teens was a part of a Sea Explorer crew hosted by a VFW post. We had survival weekend. We were allowed a sleeping bag, a tarp, a poncho, a knife, a machete and of course, a cartridge belt for our 1903 Springfield rifles, of which the VFW post had many, We were outfield in OG uniforms. The adults, three of them, were Vietnam vets. We went out in a couple of old Willys jeeps. Of course one would break down, Then the adults would get us a couple of cases of beer. Robert L Scott's God is My Co-Pilot was the first book I read as a young man... read my Dad's copy he read as a kid. Have always been amazed by the Flying Tigers... Chenault's tactics should have been utilized by the USAAF... That's how the Finns were able to have such great success with the Brewster Buffalo... huge kill ratio until late Russian models came on the scene... Use your planes strengths and take advantage of the enemies weakness... why or buffalo's and wildcats and P40s were man handled early on... Thatch had the same vision when he developed the Thatch Weave... Another thing... the AVG more than likely never saw Zeros... rather they faced Oscar's (Ki 27?)which were the Army fighters in China... not the Navy Zeroes... similar profiles... but not Zeroes... P-40s were modified in the field by the well known method of porting, and polishing. The manifold, and aftercooler restrictions were reduced Savvy mechanics improved the air through the aftercooler. Both Robert Johnson "God is my Copilot", and "Tex" Hill describe divng from 18,000. volume / pressure, means a greater amount or air flow for a given pressure. A cooler afterccooler means better density.

@adirondacker007 Жыл бұрын
@@michaeltelson9798there is a lot of misunderstanding regarding those engines. The way I have read it from multiple sources is that when the order was placed at the Allison engine production plant, they had a large stockpile of rejected components. In an engine production facility, the engines are built by assemblers using components that have been through inspections to verify that their tolerances allow absolute interchangeability. The assembly line worker can just grab parts off the line and install them this way. The decision was made to use up some of the rejected parts in the 100 engine order. I have yet to find a documented explanation for this. Obviously, the engines had to be custom built by technicians and not assemblers, meaning more labor expenses for the sake of using up the rejected parts. The only justification I can envision is that at that particular time, production-qualified components were temporarily in short supply or unavailable, but I have no supporting evidence for my suspicions. Whatever the explanation, those particular engines were built to tighter tolerances than normal, with the benefits of increased power and longer lifespans. I'm a volunteer docent at The American Heritage Museum, where the last P-40B in restored condition resides. Its engine is one of the 100 built for the American Volunteer Group. I clear up the "engine story" for guests fairly often.

The 1st 40 minutes or so is important to understand what happened in SE Asia from 1937-1945, and beyond. It is still important today. You see, I lived on the island of Taiwan in the late 1950's as a child. The guy in charge there was General Chiang Kai-shek. My father was a US Army military advisor ( MAAG) to his army. I attended Mission schools, and lived both in Taipai and Hsinchu. While I lived there, Taiwan, was still under martial law. I even saw the great generalissimo once during a speech he gave. We lived in a walled , guarded compound the Japanese had built as a fort during their occupation of the island. Understanding China is also important for our future as well. In my humble opinion, China will someday use Taiwan as an excuse to start a war with whomever refuses to allow them to take that island back. Study history, or you are doomed to repeat it.

Chinese American pilots such as John “Buffalo” Wong of Los Angeles who was the first ace in the Gloster Gladiator. From Portland, Oregon, Art Chin also became an ace. Fire damage to his hands after being shot down over Hong Kong stopped his fighter career but moved to flying the Hump. He was a friend of Chennault’s as well. Great if you want the full story of how/why the Flying Tigers got involved and the politics of the same-time Chinese Civil War. Some of the interviews with former pilots are interesting, but they're almost administrative focussing on how recruitment happened not what happened in the fighting and what made the legend. If you want to find out what happened you have to wait until about the 90 min mark to the Flying Tigers story in China, and even that's well... skinny.

Dear Thomas, perhaps you are not aware that you have options. You might want to take a look at KZbin Premium, among the many perks, it also eliminates all ads. More of less 20% of our KZbin users have it, and appreciate the benefits it comes with. It’s nice option that gives you a choice, unlike most other popular social platforms. By the way, you can also download an ad blocker if you really do not want to contribute to the YT community 😉 that will do as well

I love the guy in white shoes! Though, as I was in Med school and did not go to the NAM, I was horrified at the way these soldiers were treated when they came back! People spit on them! and, what is more despicable is that the VA system and the Federal Govt. abandoned them! Oh, PTST mattered none, and was ignored! AT that time I was a HIPPIE! But I would have no part of demeaning these brave soldiers who fought, were wounded and died, some were my high school friends, for this SHITTY WAR! To this day, I'm 75, I salute and thank anyone in uniform. They don't start the wars, they just have to fight them. What if someone called a war, and no one showed up? I was priviledged to fly a Stearman. It was my 50th birthday present from my flight instructer. It had been completely restored, except that instead of the stock about 250 HP engine, it was souped up to 450 HP. As usual, I asked my instructer, by now my friend, if I could break this airplane? He said no, and if you lose control, I'll bail you out. For 1 hour, I absolultey flew the "bejesus" out of this plane, cross controlling, putting the plane into every critical attitude I could think of. Stalls, spins, loops, upside down stalls and recovery. It was the highlight of my, and any pilots, flying adventures. We never pulled enough gees to black out. Not that we didn't try. I guess I was too gentle. The indiscremenent bombing of the Chinese peasants should have alerted all of US! Then we might have been prepared for their brutal Japanese atrocities in WWII Someday I may discuss the German NAZIS. To contemplate it turms my stomach! And yet, now we are Allies. How strange is Fate? Yet, it was. not the German people who "strayed" from Humanity! It happens every day!. Probably, no one will ever read this, and tha's fine. I've been told I should write a book. Maybe I should, or just SHUT UP!. YooHooHoo! Bob I love the appeasement stratigy! Cover your ass! Works every time! The Japs, the Krauts, I don't know who were more barbaric. Well as the Cronkite said, "and that's the way it was!" Bob

ROBERT....please do not shut up....from a Canadian Hippie 73; whose Father Norman was in 263 Fighter Sqd. RCAF maintaining P-40 Kittyhawks (your Flying Tigers of China and North Africa) that the USA gave (lent) us to protect Vancouver and Seattle from a Japanese attack by the Japanese Army sitting in the Alaska Aleutian Islands...(what those ass frozen aircrew now call (THE FORGOTTEN WAR).... WHY WE LET JAPAN SIT IN ALASKAN WATER'S 1930????? PLEASE RECALL; THE ONLY CIVILIAN AMERICAN'S TO DIE ON AMERICAN SOIL (WW 2) WERE A MOTHER AND HER 4 CHILDREN...WHEN A JAPANESE BALLOON BOMB FELL ON THEIR FARM HOUSE IN WASHINGTON STATE.....my father's P-40's Pilots were tasked with shooting down those hot balloons......(the main objective of this sadistic weapon was to burn down the forests of the north west) I was not a drug folk singing Hippie....I was a "make love; not war" hippie in the vain of Joan Baez; whose advice to women was....(to not have sex or marry any man with a draft card) that single directive, may have ended the Vietnam war....... but people were to stoned to listen to her.....that advice thankfully would not end a war today.... thank God....Because North American women have signed up to serve in all aspects of the military and as Navy Pilots on carriers as attack pilots (Russian women in WW 2 were snipers (A RUSSIAN WOMAN HAD 300 PLUS KILLS) and pilots and tank mechanics; Democracies 1940's chauvinism SEXISM/RACISM; hurt the Allied War EFFORT (except for ROSIE THE RIVETER) WITHIN THE NEXT DECADE THE LAST PARENT OF WE HIPPIES WILL HAVE "LAST POST" PLAYED AND THEIR CRY "NEVER AGAIN" RE: THE NAZI FASCISM; HOLOCAUST WILL BE LOST........(AND TO BE FAIR WE HAVE HAD A GENOCIDAL APPROACH TO INDIGENOUS NORTH AMERICAN'S FOR A VERY LONG TIME WHICH IS ONLY NOW BEING REPAIRED) Fascism is now rearing its' ugly head around the world and here in North America.... (HENRY FORD WAS A HUGE FAN OF HITLER'S "FINAL JEWISH POLICY" AND SENT ADOLPH A CHECK FOR $50,000 EACH AND EVERY BIRTHDAY) (TO BE FAIR; SO WERE MANY BRITISH ROYALTY FANS OF HITLER'S ECONOMIC POLICIES) I HATE OUR FAILURE OF THE PEACE MOVEMENT OF THE 60'S AND FAILURE OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS AND NOW THE UN.......AND OUR 60'S YOUTH GUIDED BY UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS AND ROCK AND ROLL LOSERS WHOM SAID..... drop out!!!! get strung out and get laid without protection with anyone stupid and high enough to live life without protecting ones own health or ones own territory; BUT FIRST BUY MY RECORD..We protesters did not stop the VIETNAM WAR war..... POLITICIAN'S FEAR OF LOSING AN ELECTION AND MOTHER'S ANGRY AT THE WAR AND SIMPLY BEING TIRED ENDED THAT WAR..... ie. in 1939 America and Russia had Peace Treaties with Hitler sayin you would not assist any country at war with Hitler so that Ford and GM could have trade with them.......Canada could not fund a military in 1938..... The Commonwealth declared war on Germany to protect Poland.... after Russia defeated Germany in the east and Allied forces defeated Italy and Germany in the west and America alone defeated Japan in the Pacific........ "WE IGNORANTLY GAVE POLAND TO RUSSIA" AND THEY ALMOST TOOK DENMARK"...... NO ONE WINS A WAR....... EXCEPT BUSINESS ...... BUT INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS AND ROSIE THE RIVETER ....... WON THAT WAR ON THE BACKS OF VETERANS..... A MAJORITY OF VETERANS WHOM ACTUALLY SAW ACTION AFTER THE WAR BECAME PEACE-NICKS OR PACIFISTS OR DRUNKS TO DEAL WITH THEIR PTSD.......... at the end of the war Canada had the fourth largest Air force and Navy in the world......and a very respected Army........why...... We were 5 million....1.5 Canadian's volunteered or were drafted but THE WHY is Roosevelt with his small group of non Isolationists; whom gave Canada and Russia and Britain Billions upon Billions of dollars in planes ships and planes and tanks without which Europe would have been a Nazi Fascist single country doing business with Henry Ford.......... Pearl Harbor is the only reason Hitler was defeated.......HAD THE JAPANESES NAVY BEEN SMART AND ATTACKED AUSTRALIA INSTEAD OF HAWAII.........NORTH AMERICA WOULD BE THE ONLY THREE DEMOCRACIES IN THE WORLD AND WE WOULD BE CONSTANTLY UNDER ECONOMIC SANCTIONS........ WE WOULD BE POOR......LIKE MEXICO...RICH IN DONKEYS AND PEOPLE...... WALKING INSTEAD OF DRIVING... SOBER THOUGHT.....THE CHINESE RED ARMY OWNS A CONTROLLING SHARE IN GENERAL MOTORS....... by 2030 all manufacturing of automobiles will be in China....... we will become a communist/capitalist Chines billionaires protectorate...(LIKE ENGLAND IS TODAY FOR RUSSIAN BILLIONAIRES WHOM ABHORS LIVING IN RUSSIA)... we won the battle for freedom.....but we have lost the economic war for global superiority..... Millennial just do not want blue collar jobs...... Canada fought a good war...we were farmers and ranchers and miners and loggers and fishermen....hard as steel..... but the METAL WEAPONS WE USED WERE..... mostly produced by the USA...... so I say thanks.... but currently you are kissing CHINA'S ASS AND ABANDONING YOUR ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP WITH US TO PROTECT WHAT FEW MANUFACTURING JOBS YOU HAVE LEFT AT HOME....NIXON INTRODUCED US INTO BECOMING CANADIAN AND AMERICAN AND MEXICAN SECOND RATE CONTINENT...........WE HAVE SERIOUSLY LOST THE MANUFACTURING WAR...... BRITAIN JUST MADE ITS' LAST WW 2 PAYMENT TO YOU...... YOU SHOULD HAVE FORGIVEN THAT DEBT LIKE YOU DID FOR RUSSIA....... OUR WW 2 ALLIES (CHINA AND RUSSIA) ARE OUR CURRENT ENEMY ECONOMICALLY AND FOR FREEDOM........ HALF YOUR MILLENNIAL'S AND MOTHER'S AND WOMEN ARE IN FAVOR OF GUN CONTROL..... HITLER IMPLEMENTED GUN CONTROL..... you no longer have a lead mine ...... in a war with Canada...... you will have to buy your lead from ????????? US OR CHINA...LOL...ONCE WE WERE FREEDOM LOVING...NO LONGER

Marine Corps fighter ace Col. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington absolutely hated Flying Tigers commander Gen. Claire Chennault, who he served under in the AVG before Pearl Harbor, and was the only the American officer he openly mocked for cowardice and incompetence using their real name in his legendary book “Baa Baa Black Sheep.”

The Japanese had 4 definitive surface ship victories following the battle of Midway at .Savo Island, tassafaronga, Kolombangara and Vella LaVella. Kula Gulf and the carrier battle of Santa Cruz are arguable though the attrition of veteran IJN aircrews at Santa Cruz was the culmination of a strategic disaster for Japan. Also the Nationalists and NOT Mao Zedong's cult are who took the brunt of the attrition for China during the whole 8 years of China's second war with Japan. There have been revelations through declassified intelligence and other sources that debunk misconceptions about Chiang Kia-shek's priorities as regards Japan and the Communists. The documentary is nevertheless a good one with especially fascinating personal accounts by the late Tex Hill.

So all these pilots go in together a rent a large house with beer frig., pool table, foosball tables, projector room, nice party house! Lloyd an Rod, another pilot I met at build was co-pilot flying me an son across state an back with one other passenger on board! Lloyd & Rod as captain an co-pilot gave me head set too listen in all all cockpit communications! On the ground, They turned props by hand, too match each other for my pictures! After I came home airlines asked Lloyd to test fly airplane after maintenance! He was pulling his son on board, when he stopped, told son to wait, he'd be right back!
