Let's Fly 72X

I flew 72X to Oceano Airport (L52), a small coastal airport between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. The sand dunes and beach are a fun place to ride ATV's, drive your trucks, campers, trailers and offroad vehicles. You can rent ATV's near the dunes. Everything in within walking distance. They have bikes at the airport for you to ride to the beach and around town. The Rock and Roll Diner is a cool 1950's style restaurant inside two railroad cars.

That was so nostalgic for me. I haven't flown into Oceano for many, many years now. I do remember the winds really changing up on final approach. It was so long ago...my buddy and I buzzed Pirate's Cove over by Avila Beach (several times) because it was a nude beach back then and all the beautiful girls from Cal Poly SLO used to go there. Great memories! Thanks for taking us along with you.

Your comment is one of the reasons I started recording my flights! I love hearing that it is a place you flew to. I’m glad I was able to bring back some fond memories. Thank you!

Nice Flight Jeff! Hope all is well with you. I've been to Oceano during Covid, wanted to rent a Quad but of course everything was closed. I did drive on the beach a little, then went Kayaking up by Pismo. Got another flight in with my friend on the 172. we went down the coast to Bixby Bridge then up through Carmel Valley and back through Salinas to Watsonville. Beautiful day flying above Pebble Beach. Take Care :)

Jeff, is there an advantage to having the 3 blade vs a two blade prop on the Arrow? Thanks for the video.

Great question! For the most part it is just a great looking propeller compared to a two blade. It does have a slightly better climb rate but at level flight, no difference in performance with a two blade propeller. I was flying to Washington state in my Arrow and a friend of mine was flying in his Arrow. He has a two blade propeller and asked ATC if they could compare our speeds. ATC stated I was two knots faster but I truly think they are the same as far as performance

Thanks for the reply. I used to fly a TB20 back in the early 80s. The ground clearance on the two blade props was only about 5 inches. Which to me is just asking for a prop strike at some point. Not sure if that would also be a factor on the Arrows. Personally I've always liked the Arrow. My problem is,,, I prefer the Lycoming engines. I've seen a few cracked cases on Continentals in Cessna 210s and how the owners constantly seem to baby them, but still, its likey more of a personal unsupported bias I my part. I really like the updated airfoil and conventional tails on the Arrow 3s. Not a fan of the T tails on the Arrow 4s at all. All things considered, it's hard to beat the Arrow 3.
